It is a case of finding the sound.  Likely areas are where it clips to shock, or at the base of shock if the air bladder has failed.

New shock is needed BUT you must change both together.

Either go for air shocks again or standard shocks which are cheaper.

I put standard shocks on my elite as money was tight...sometimes a regretted decision.

Soapy water is a good way to find air leaks

Disconnect sensor arm (centre right in pic) raise lever by hand, should be able to locate air leak

Not necessarily, could just be a leaking airline ;)

Likely to be a leaking/perished bag on the shocker. IMHO  ::)  :y

Needs checking, as other thread. Usually the oil leaks out of the dampers long before the bags fail.

Does the back end bang over bumps? By that I mean, with no oil in the dampers there is no damping of the suspension stroke, so as the wheel hits a bump the wheel takes off and bangs as the spring forces it back on the road. The up slope of speed bumps is a prime example.

Both the sets I've changed have failed on the air bag .......  :-\ :-\

...trust you to be awkward. ;D

Dampness at the base of the shock is the give away if failed recently. Plus the previously mentioned banging over bumps.

IME for the bag to fail they need to have no air in them, so chaif themselves to bits with suspension movement.

Or maybe the oil has got on the air bag and rotted the rubber maybe...?

Possibly  :-\. But you could hear the air escaping both times.  :y :y
