New ebay scam - sort of
« on: 29 August 2012, 10:57:44 »

I recently listed my wife's car on the 'bay - put my mobile on advert for questions

Ended monday evening.
Email from buyer asking for phone number and collection details Monday night,
to which I replied.
Phone call Tuesday morning "hi, I won the car on ebay - I want to collect this morning.
can I have the registration number so I can insure it"

They turn up, pay cash, drive away.

Email through ebay "I want to collect Thursday, can I have reg. number"

So basically, someone has pretended to be buyer rather than bid.

Did the first buyer not contact you through Ebay, then? :-\

I would give the Ebay buyer the scam buyers address off the V5C and let him deal with it ::)

Sorry yes.
First, "official ebay" buyer emailed through ebay - she's legit.
2nd, "cash buyer" only contacted through telephone.

The cash is in the bank, so I haven't lost out.
Unless I get a neg...  >:(

Had you left a tel no on the advert. That would be the only way the scam buyers could have contacted you. Or otherwise the actual buyer's account has been hacked. Although if it was an omega you sold, you have to question why someone would go to those lengths for something as plain as an omega?

I would have asked for an Ebay reciept from the buyer before releasing the car, TBH. OK, won't stop a scammer who has hacked their account, but that would be a matter for Ebay to chase. If you'd put a phone number on the ad. then it's easy to see how a disgruntled bidder who didn't win the item might have tried his luck. :(

I'd forgotten they existed. Now added to the "possible winter shed" list...

It was actually a REALLY good car.
If you're looking for one, tho, look out for the rear CV joints.
They leak oil, then the diffs overheat. Then you end up with a standard FWD.

Petrol consumption about the same as the 3.0MV6, but without the performance.
80mph max on m/way private airfield.
Useful for muddy fields at the car boot sale.

And they are no fun, AT ALL in the snow.
Sure footed, no sliding. Completed boring.
