I lived in Australia for a bit in the late 90's and from what I remember their welfare system was very similar to the UK's, and if I remember rightly it was even more generous than ours. I can remember chatting to a bunch of surfing lads on a beach and was shocked to find out that they were all on the dole and were getting about double what they would have here in Britain!

At the time it seemed that there were loads of youngsters hanging around on the beaches while claiming benefits.

They're known as 'Dole Bludgers', and very similarly ordinary hard working Aussies get very angry about them!!

Another shocker was when I went into an Bottle Shop in rural Western Australia, grabbed a slab of beers and a box of wine and took them to the checkout. There was a conversation with the Checkout Girl that went something like this:-
CG: Sorry I can't sell you those!
TH: Whynot? I'm over 18!
CG: It's Thursday!
TH: Eh? What's that got to do with anything??
CG: (Looking abit embarrassed) I'll get the manager...
The manager then came over and quietly explained that they weren't allowed to sell alcohol on a Thursday as it was when the dole cheques were issued and the Aborigines would blow it all on booze!!

So I had a dry Thursday night!!

I bet the Bottle Shop was busy on a Friday though!!
