Apparently in July 2003, it became an offence for the general public to purchase and apply Coal Tar Creosote.

So, how do mere mortals like us OOFers go about getting hold of it.

I painted a load of fence & trellis wood in Feb/March time with a well known brand of fence paint - but the weather has been so wet that it's already started to fade off in places.

Is substitue Croesote any good?

Any ideas?

I am fortunate as my wifes aunt/uncle own a wood/fencing business so I turn up with my 5ltr empty containers and fill up and donate to the cat feed fund.

Best advise is fine an old fashion wood business who do fencing/logging etc and see if they will sell it to you.Unfortunatley Kent is a bit far for you to come down as sure we could have helped you out.

Looks like they sell 20ltr drums for collection or bigger depending how much fence you have ..and how much you want to stink

I got mine off E-Bay, you can only get large quantities 25 litres or so, there are a couple on there at the moment collection only tho'.

The substitute is crap, I use the proper stuff to kill red mite in the chicken coop.

It is available for agricultural use only, it is not illegal to sell or purchase it and I've not had anyone knocking on the door with a warrant.

Let me check in the garage Rob and see if mine has  suppliers info

Don't forget to mix old engine oil with it, goes further, better protection and a nice dark colour

Agreed. Old Omega oil works well enough.

Mix it 50/50 with old engine oil,, DO NOT mix with gearbox oil-- I made that mistake once- took about 2-3 months to dry, and it stunk!

I used that fence coat stuff .... what a waste of time  its all stripey within 2 weeks .... old fella i know used engine oil with creosote and is just as he painted it 10 yrs ago , oil change soon then

I had British Rail or whatever they are called these days next door at the time- so just stunk garden out

  My garage still smells of the old Jag diff oil, and I did that weeks ago - dread to think what your garden smelt like!
