Can somebody help shed some light on N/S/R tyre  wearing on an under inflated pattern, however tyre is inflated to 40psi but is still wearing the shoulders away !

How old is the tyre? Date stamp on the sidewall

Eg, 3104 is 31st week of 04

many thanks, tyre age unknown at this time will check tomorrow. tyre appears to by a "cheapie", thought i'd heard of/ come across most of the bad ones in 15 yrs of taxi's !

Tyre Manufacturer is Elanperdana, country of origin is Indonesia, tyre type is Accelera Alpha and the date stamp appears to be 0228288, everthing else is unknown as it was inherited with the car which a 2001, 2.2ltr petrol estate. needs tidying and odd electrical probs sorted, but with previous experience and the forums help,we will hope fully restore her to former glory !

thank chris for your reply, it would now make sense to say that its 07year as from what you indicate the date stamp reads 4507. would have replied sooner but fighting with steering idler and roll bar droplinks.have any suggestions as to removal of O/S top drop link nut as i can't get 3/8 socket and ext. bar onto it and ring spanners are rounding off the nut !

Accelera Alphas are not a bad tyre - I and other members have used these without issue.

Top drop link nut - you need an 18mm (or 19mm) socket (dependant on nut size) and possibly breaker bar.  You need to hold the threaded part of the joint still - there are flats which take a 17mm open end spanner for that purpose  :y

Or there may be an Allen key socket in the back if the ball joint thread, depending on the make.

Tyre is old but not so old as to be causing your symptoms unless it's been run underinflated, for what ever reason.

Is the car level, ride height look correct, camber look sensible compared to the front...?

Unusual one, it seems. :-\

thanks again chris, yes car looks level, camber seems ok but the sympoms are as previously stated underinflation. however having run the carltons and then the omega as taxis always found the best pressure was 40psi on the rear, always gave max mileage over handling. have been running now for about six months on 38/40psi and still the shoulders are still wearing away. think i'll cut my losses and put a pirelli p600 part worn on to match the O/side. as for the drop link its beging to look like a nut splitter and replacement nut job !

To get outside edge wear on the rear is unusual. Inside edge yes, but not the outside and cirtainly not at the same time. Usual pressure is 32 unloaded. And at that pressure wear in the centre of the tread is normal. Opposite of the front. If that's not a sucking egg statement.

So if it's not a fault with the tyre itself it needs set up for full geo and see what's going on. Does it drive straight? A part worn is a good idea IMO. In case a new one goes the same way due to a set up issue. And paying attention to the cars before and after tyre change feel.

Although, could constant over inflation cause the middle to belly out? Might just be a duff tyre. Could be concerning.

The OP's symptoms sound like failed bushes allowing uncontrolled wheel movement.

That said I have never seen any mention on this forum of problems due to worn semi-trailing arm bushes on the rear  :-\

re disc cutter chris, tad to close to the brake pipes for my likeing, so back to either a nut splitter or the old fashioned method, hammer,cold chisel and sore knuckles!!!
 Andy, thanks for your input, have had it all once overed shortly after getting it home by a qualified mot inspector who could only find o/s/f wishbone bushes, however that said, mot date in about 6 weeks should find things that may not have shown before !  (ps my fitter is an hgv fitter who is used to pre mot hgv's in readiness for vosa tests !)
