Just went for a 25 mile ride. The temp gauge never got higher than an absolute smidge over 80 ? This car has always run at a smidge below 90.. Outside temp according to gauge 8.5c. Any ideas...

Yep, that would be my guess, had a similar situation earlier in the year and it turned out to be the stat, also had no heating even when on HI.

If car is a V6 ,suggest you buy the transfer pipe along with the thermostat and housing as seperating them is not always succesful

Sounds normal to me, just above 80 in winter, just below 90 in summer.

Rightly or wrongly, I wouldnt worry unless it goes out of that section of the gauge, between 80 and 90, when the engine is warm. Fluctuation in that range is seasonal IME.

But then, I have little to no experience with stats.

I agree also, and had the same problem with my 3.0 and also Daughters Corsa ......

Since doing it (with flushing and correct coolant) the operating temps on both cars have risen, with the Omega the temp stays spot on for the majority of the time. It will go up a bit in traffic or after a fast run, but soon settles down.

100% agree about the transfer pipe - mine was really difficult to remove and the only way we did it was to knock a hole in at and use the edge of the hole  as somewhere to whack it with.

Also, my car had previously overheated due to water pump issues, so the top rad hose was impossible to remove from the end of the transfer pipe without cutting it off and replacing the hose.

V6 stats do seem to stick slightly open with age.  My 3.0l stays just below midpoint on gauge, pretty certain my 3.2 is the same - I'll keep an eye on it next time I'm out.

Both mine have fairly new stats.

Mine ran at about 80 when the stat had failed. Now just under 90 most of the time, just over 90 in traffic.

I wouldn't worry about it unless it's slow to warm up. Mine would take perhaps 5 miles of dual carriageway to get up to 80 in the mornings, and this made it a PITA to stop the screen steaming up in the winter. New 'stat fitted and it's up to temperature very quickly (a mile or 2).

Thanks all for replies. Darned thing was back to normal this morning, so might be a bit iffy. Will keep my eye on it....

As per Kevin's reply really. If it's warming up quickly enough then I wouldn't worry just yet. Mine runs cooler (80-85) in the winter but does get up to temp fairly quickly so not something I am too concerned with TBH

that seems to be the norm I'm used to. Takes about 3 minutes to warm up and the heater to start working IME.

To add my experience over the last two days, running at about 85 on guage when driving around yesterday (max temp there abouts, various conditions) but when I checked this morning after a short trip, mile or so, there was heat to be felt at the top hose to the rad... at 70-80 on the guage. Seems to support the stat sticking open, partly open view?
