Releasing the fuel filler cap seemed to make a difference or it didn't cut out when I undid the cap every 5 minutes

OK . no look with removing the fuel cap it still does it ??? . but i was on the motorway today and it started again; but it would not cut out because i had constant revs .but it was missing bad so i pulled off and it cut out .tried to restart it started but with a puff of smoke and you could smell the cats real bad [ rotten egg smell] so i think the cats got real hot because of the timing  with the  coil packs playing up . it then drove like normal again all the way home so i think it could well be the coil packs  what do you think  cheers  :y carl

Check for fault codes (pedal trick),pull plug leads and check for oil in the plug wells. ;)

I had similar issues with my 2.0 16v. It was very annoying and a worry on major roads. Turned out to be the crank sensor. The wires at the sensor end had become bare and were touching each other giving confusing signals to the ecu. Replaced and car working well again. You need to get the codes.

Yes. Will send you a PM. I will try and find a pic of one to send you, then try unplugging the electrical plug to yours. If yours is faulty, the car may run better with it unplugged as the ECU will use a default setting rather than the faulty signal froma damaged MAF. This would confirm yours is faulty, although the fault code has probably already done that tbh.  :y
