OE cam cover gaskets.
« on: 01 October 2012, 09:02:59 »

Just called my local VX dealer to find out the price of a cam cover gasket for my 98 2.0 ltr. We are talking £32.50 plus 80 pence each for the O rings. How in God's name can you justify that price for a gasket??  Can anyone recommend a reasonable alternative supplier. :o :o :o

It has to be genuine.

AndyC sometimes can get them at a slightly better price, but might be offset by postage? Drop him a PM :y

Seems to be more time, than miles, IMHO.

TBE had hers done at around 60k, although had suffered a hard life of "Full Vauxhall Service History" before I go it.

Did my 2.2 at 103k ish I think, motherT's 3.0 also changed at just over 100k too.

But I guess it just hardens over long period of time  :-\

While it is expensive, they justify the price because it's the only part that works for an acceptable period of time.

You can probably find cheaper, but long term you'll be doing the job again in short order, making pattern parts for this application a false economy. Especially as there's a real risk of damaging the ignition system as well. So there's your justification.

Expensive, yes. But worth it long term. :y

Mine lasted about 47k but the car was 11 years old so I think age is more of a factor. It was the original gasket and did well considering it has a "full VX service history" and never had breathers cleaned, though it did have regular oil changes. It was only weeping out of one cam cover bolt but went a bit brittle.

I do apreciate your advice but I'm thinking about the economics of spending that sort of money on a car that's pushing two hundred thousand miles on the clock and will only probably only get through it's next MOT by the skin of its teeth as it's going to need a replacement engine soon.
So I was thinking as a stop gap measure I would perhaps  get one from a motor factors as it would only need to last no more than ten thousand miles and around a year BUT...I have just checked with Europarts and they want £22.50 so for another tenner then it's going to be a no brainer and VX win again ::) :y

Thanks every one,I really should have done my homework and checked around, it's just money's a bit tight at the moment but I agree it would have been a false economy to buy cheapo ;)

Is the sealant used on a 2.0 the same as used on the V6 ?
