Is it possible for key to lose its sync with the ECU?

Hi,

I have just finished changing both the head gaskets on my 1999 3.0L Omega, on and off it has taken about 2 months. But now it just wont start, I have double checked all connections to no avail.

I have checked the fuel and ignition relays and although there is power coming to them OK there is no earth pulse from the ECU to pressurise the fuel rail before trying to start it. If I bypass the relay and pass power straight to the fuel pump the pump works OK so not a pump issue.

The only thing left I can think of that's causing it is the key transponder has lost sync with the ECU. I have  been using the key manually for about a year after the battery contacts came apart, but with the car battery disconnect for a couple of months is it possible to lose sync?

Any ideas?

If engine is cranking but not firing and no fuel is reaching the rail I`d be suspecting the crank sensor. Any spark at the plugs? EML lit or flashing when cranking?

As RobG says, is EML flashing when you turn ignition on?

Not seen either the immobiliser or the ATWS/CDL ECUs lose config on its own. When used with not-legal-in-the-UK diags programming tools, yeah, seen that screw a few ECUs

Have you tried the paper clip test Phil?

I would have thought the fuel pump would prime the system for a moment after turning the key? Or is that not the case with the Omega?

But no fuel when cranking either, Ive not checked for spark yet. No EML light, but I'm not convinced the bulb is OK Ive never seen it light up before.

Anyway that's given me a few ideas to check out tomorrow evening and given me confidence that I am not fighting a loosing battle with the key gone.

Ive not tried the paper clip test as I was going to hook it up to the laptop tomorrow evening, perhaps I should have done that before posting!! But was starting to get a bit fed up with it earlier.

It was a plug at the back of then engine I had missed, DOH!!!
