wrong fuel
« on: 03 October 2012, 18:46:31 »

the old chap that is currently working for me put petrol in his diesel van by mistake last weekend £20 worth

the van is a W reg 2.8 movano. he was advised to stick £60 of diesel in and told it would eventually work its way out.

The van used to pull like a train but at the moment is slow to accelerate although it is not missfiring at all.

any advice please

They did an experiment on a motoring program a few years ago. They drained the tanks, put petrol in a diesel & visa versa.
They drove them till they conked. Filled the tanks with the correct fuel & all was good.
Brim it with diesel & it'll be ok :y

£20.00's only 3 gallon & in a twenty gallon tank. I wouldn't worry :)

On an older diesel engine I'd agree with you but on a modern, common rail system even as little as 10% petrol in the system can cause damage ;)

Modern, common rail engines use a high pressure pump with very small tolerances and rely on the lubrication from the diesel. Putting petrol, a solvent, through them is never good for them ;) On some makes you can get away with more but, unfortunately this isn't one of them  ::)

The fact that it's still starting and running means he will probably get away with filling back up again and it will eventually clear. I'd also advise looking for a fuel system additive that lubricates (but doesn't clean!) the fuel system but I'm not aware of one that is available to the public. Ours is specially formulated for us and unique ;) It's also expensive ::)

Yep... A bit of 2 stroke would be better than a kick in the nads :y :y

Not trying to be secretive, although I have quoted Paul a price which is why I've done it via PM ;)

Incidentally, I'm not advising he has it drained as they have managed to use most of the fuel in the tank anyway ;)
