One for all you PC gurus out there ...........

SWMBO has office 2007 installed on her laptop, but only very occasionally has any need to use it.

However, recently she has started to use it in conjunction with a project she is working on as a School Governor and has been huffing and puffing whilst using Word 2007. Seems that her desktop machine at work has office '97 installed - which she likes using, and is getting frustrated by the differences between 2007 and '97.

So, my question is this - is it possible to have '97 installed on the machine as well as 2007. Or, will we have to remove 2007 and install '97 from scratch. If the later then where would we get a copy of '97 from to do this.

Hope this all makes sense.

You won't find a legal copy anywhere, I shouldn't think - Word 97 is, as the name implies, 15 years old now; Microsoft stopped supporting it in 2001 (and ended 'assisted support' in 2004)..

Depending how new your home computer is it's quite possible that it wouldn't even install and run as the OS will be that much newer..

you can amend the menus to classic style rather than ribbon, which will probably make her happy.

Just chucked an OEM set of office 97 disks out.   


Cant you save a black word doc in 97 format under 2007 and then copy it to a USB pen to use at work.

Other way round is that something written under 97 should be able to be read under 2007 (MS reckon thier stuff is backwards compatible)

Just thinking her work is 15 years out of date (the tight wads)

Cant seee the sense in using (and hence learning) a very obsolete piece of software such as 97!

I'm currently on Office 2003. Still IMHO the best version (depending on usage anyway.) Get her a copy of 2003. It is fairly similar to '97 in terms of layout / ease of useability.

And yes, it is possible to install both programs on the same system.

She works for a small company - there has been no need to update the software as '97 does all that's needed. In fact, I'll double check that it isn't 2003 she uses at work actually - as that's OK IIRC.

The project is at home and nothing to do with work - just means she is using her laptop for more than just surfing.

The classic menu views look interesting - must see where they are hidden, an initial look hasn't found them yet

Knew I had looked at it in the past....there are addons for office that do this, not a default option sorry.
