pulling my hair out
« on: 09 October 2012, 18:33:41 »

 :-[ hi folks... Lee here

I'm asking the questions as Phil is out on the road

Ok here goes will try to remember everything but please bear with me, and remember I'm a woman lol ;D

We got the 2.5 v6 in august, and stupidly had bought it unseen as we bought it while on holiday, my sis and bil picked it up for us, while driving it home the temp guage never moved at all, but we had no overheating. no leaks etc and we had a slight misfire at around 50mph

we got her home and phil checked her over, and found a lead  was not connected...  he re connected it and bingo the guage works .... however the guage rose rapidly to 90-95 and sat there, the guage will even rise to the red band and sit there, the temp light comes on, but here is another wierd thing, in other cars when the temp has gotten high, we have turned the heater on and opened the windows and the temp has come down.but in this car the temp goes up with the heater on  but the engine does not appear to be overheating, no leaks, coolant level stays where it is.

Phil has replaced the theromstat and housing.... the waterpump.. the sender unit... and even as a last resort new clocks/guages in case it was faulty, he has flushed the system out in case of any blockages.. flushed the rad after filling with radflush,re filled with good quality antifreeze

its still doing it, in fact today I had a hospital appointment and for 30 mins of driving the guage stayed at 92-95 but then went to the red band, I couldn't stop immediately as I was in a queue of school traffic, I stopped as soon as I could, and switched off, popped the bonnet, and the water level was the same as when I started out, there is never any steam. drips etc

after coming out of the hospital 30 mins later she was ok to drive.... but on the way home the guage was playing silly b*****s rising and falling between 90 and the red band, and dropping quickly each time I stopped, turned off and switched on again after a few minutes

Sorry for the ultra long post

I'll leave my other problem, for another post lol

Monies on a partially blocked radiator if the fans are cutting in , flushed mine numerous amounts of times and ended up pulling my hair out the same ...changed the radiator and no more issues . HTH  :)

Yep, I remember the day well.... ;D :y

I agree.

Would be worth seeing what the CTS readings are alongside the actual temp gauge ones.

But likelihood is a blockage... or a water pump impellor falling to bits...

Don't worry but I lost my hair ages ago thanx to miggys ;D ;D ;D
Oh dear, Why oh why a car that can have so many hard to rectify or diagnose problems could be bought without it being seen or road tested is a bit daft I think. Act in haste and repent at leisure is a proverb that still has meaning today.......but at least the forums should be able to get you on the road quite quickly.
One thing that the miggys do not like is the use of the so called radiator or leak selants. There are many tiny water passages that become blocked very easily and could cause your symptoms. Sometimes it can be flushed out, back flushing is best, by the use of plain water but be wary of the radiator and cooling system cleaners because they can also cause leaks if any componet is a bit weak through age.
If you are not losing coolant then you will have to go through it stage by stage first starting with the actual temerature readings being taken with a probe. The next is to test the thermostat is working, next stage would be to ensure that the electric cooling fans are working as they should. So it goes on step by step until the cause is found. Fortunately there are great guides to all of the steps in the Guides on the forum.
Wish you luck, but next time don't be so hasty....... :y

Regarding the cooling issue. If the cooling fans are coming on then I would remove the radiator and get some Fernox from B&Q. Lie the rad flat and fill it with Fernox and boiling water and leave it over night. While the Rad is out get a pressure washer and clean the air con condenser from the inside of the engine bay outwards. In the morning flush the rad with loads of cold water then pressure wash that, again from the inside of the engine bay outwards, you'll be surprised how much cack you get out of the rad :y
