Any views on one of these
« on: 22 October 2012, 10:36:09 »

Saw this on ebayhttp://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/221131918609?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649 and I definitely want one!! Dont know anything about them though and any other merc I've driven I've found very solid. Bound to be good as a ''fun'' car though?? Anyone had experience with this model??

Nearly bought one not so long ago. Good looking motor but they are prone to rusting big time at the usual places, wheel arches and bottom of doors.

I know merc have a reputation for rust but theres not many cars that dont rust and as long as its found early it can be managed, I heard somewhere that merc also had a lot of electrical gremlins???

Merc quality fell off a cliff in the late 90's, C class was particularly poor. All suffered rust in places you would not beleave plus electrical issues, auto boxes failing the works. The E class seemed to avoid most of these.

looks to be improving again now

Hi - Just to throw in my opinion, I bought my CLK a year ago and have really been impressed by it.  Its the 320 so it has the V6 3.2 engine and I get around 30mpg with a mixture of motorway and cross country driving, I was lucky enough to pick one up with 1 owner and very low miles at 58,000 for a very reasonable price, it has immaculate heated leather interior and it has not missed a beat.  I do miss my BOSE from my elite though, but some CLK's had this as an option so worth doing your homework on any potential purchases.

If your seriously considering a CLK have a look at the merc forum MB Club UK, they have lots of advice and help on CLK ownership on there.

I would think twice about that black V8 on ebay you linked to though, poor pictures and very little description usually mean it is not worthy of consideration and there are lots of cars available.

I hope that helps :)

Thanks Darren, glad to hear you had good experience with one, I'm watching a few on ebay at the minute I just posted that link as it came up 1st. I really fancy one to have as a fun car, they look great and there has to be serious power in that big v8!

Yes the V8's are very nice, I drove a couple before I settled on the V6 and they sounded amazing with the V8 burble and they usually come fully loaded with the toys :)

Don't be too put off by the rust issues as these tend to be on the panels and quite easily treatable, if you do go and see one and it doesn't have any rust just make sure it isn't full of filler, some owners have claimed under the warranty for rust but these are usually dealer maintained cars so expect some rust on the arches.
