snow chains
« on: 03 November 2012, 00:11:06 »

Just got some snow chains and I got two pairs.  This was even though I had read the manual which says they are only permitted on the rear (the price was so good).   So question is has anyone ever broken that permission and put them on the front? Did they work and is there any point? They are  new Maggi Rapid Matic V2 size 100 which fits my Elite 235/45 17 inch and also fits  225/55 16s and 205 15s which I think covers all Omegas .

Its gonner be a cold winter even down sarth.

Snow chains go on the driven wheels, no point in putting them on the front.

You put them on the front as well to aid braking and steering.

Elite now gone.  Bought an X-Type 4x4.  If there had been an Omega 4x4 I would have bought that instead.  We really liked the Omega, but I wanted 4x4.

Ah see what you mean, sorry for the irony.  I got them in a closing down sale near Tolworth.  I got the last two.

All the info about having snow chains on both axles seems to relate to 4WD vehicles. I can see with a front wheel drive car there is little point having chains on the back.  With the rear wheel drive mig there must be some benefit to chains on both axles but personally and looking the the varoius country regulations ( http://www.hometyre.co.uk/tyre-information/european-winter-tyre-regulations ) I don't think I need two pairs.

I got them because I got caught out 3 years back, the fake Eagle F1 pattern tyres I had then proved completely useless on any snow despite traction control.  Even with careful gentle driving the car would barely go on the flat and the slightest incline stopped it while bog standard Vectras overtook me.

Is that from experience of driving in Devonion snow?  ::)  ::)

imo snow tyre is the ultimate solution.. chains damage everything especially on a fwd drive car.. and not practical.. rubber chains are a bit better but  they cant survive long on a dry road.. :-\

Said Admin took out all the bits that looked like a sales thread, rather than ban the OP for a sales thread ::)
