Can you tell me everything I need to know about crank sensors? Can I replace them myself or what should I expect?

Thanks!

Alright, I have an update on the situation on this one...

I sent it to a mechanic and he couldn't quite figure it out. What we have is this - it's not water in the tank. They tried start-gas directly into the intake and it didn't even try to fire, it only cranked.

The spark-plugs don't give a spark, even though they've individually been tested to work. There are six spark-plugs and all the plugs on one side (three of them) are soaked in oil now.

So I am thinking it might be a relay or power distribution or some such issue? and what's with the oil on one side?

Your thoughts and assistance would be greatly appreciated! Thank you! :)

Get a decent mechanic is the first thought !!

You don't give the year/model/engine type of your motor .. but from your description I'm guessing its one of the V6 variants.

So, depending engine ... paperclip or pedal trick to read codes : http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/index.php?topic=90581.0

Non-starting as described without a code (you don't mention the EML so I assume its off) is probably a crank sensor : http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/index.php?topic=90540.0

oil in one bank of plugs is most certainly cam cover gasket & breathers :

But first thing .. read the codes .. :)

Hi there!

Thank you for your reply!

I will get it to a proper mechanic, no sweat.

Most questions were answered earlier in the thread but I'll reiterate (Sorry I didn't before)

it's a 2000 2.5 V6 as you correctly surmised.
I did paperclip test and got 013 and 031. 013 is driver's side O2 sensor and 031 was simply cuz the engine wasn't on.

I'll see about that crank-sensor and otherwise with the oil stuff.. thanks a bunch!

btw, what should a fairly decent shop charge for this? What is my ballpark you think?

Everything on that list is doable by yourself I would imagine, nothing complicated at all, if you read the guides as linked .. :)

Can I suggest you re-visit your mechanic and insert the can of easi-start/start-gas up his arse......no professional would ever use easi-start on a petrol engine and its only ever a get you out of jail one off for a diesel as it casues major damage adn tells you jack all  :y

As for the detail, the crank sensor signal needs to be seen before the ECU will:

1) Enable the fuel pump
2) Fire the injectors
3) Fire the spark plugs.

Hence no crank signal equals no fuel or spark.....an hence even ether wont make it run  :y
