my Rant!!

My wife works for Sony in the PS3 department and often gets games as they are released and as i don't have a ps3 i sell them on, the last games went missing or the buyer was dishonest and told me they never arrived so i was out the €50 I should have got and the postage which i had paid. So now i have a few more games and want to post them on the bay and they won't let me give more than €3,70 in for postage which means no tracking number and no insurance so i wrote to ebay and asked them why and their reaction was basically theat ebayers abuse the system so they cap postage fees and if i want more out of the postage i should add this onto the game which ofcourse puts up the amount of fees you pay to ebay, i understand this to a point but to not allow insured post on something with a value of over €50 i find terrible, so if there are any gamers out there i have F1 2012 and need for speed most wanted brand new (in English) for the price of postage and a couple of beer tokens!!

Not a fan of F1 myself. But if you have Call of Duty Black Ops 2 or Assassins Creed 3 I may be interested

Not sold anything for a while so not seen any cap, not sure there is in UK but I buy quite a lot and prefer those with free p&p, I know it is built into the purchase price but I find comparing prices better this way....

Seemples, list using a courier, add price then post standard tracked, no capping

tried adding a courier which worked but still had the choice of p&p which was capped at 3 quid, Tonka  i will let you know if i get them, i got them last year!

I agree with ebay's stance, too many 99p + £15 p&p auctions going on, which is against the idea of what ebay started as.

In your particular case, the games cost you nothing, so its all profit (assuming you don't declare it to taxman, which you would/should if you were UK based), so a few extra cents in ebay fees isn't th end of the world.  Remember, Ebay are not a charity, they need lots of income to pay for their 1000s of servers and bandwidth needed to run their sites.

I have to totally agree with you not! Here is why -  In the last quarter of 2011 Ebay turnover was $2.495 billion with net profits of $559.2 million or 22.4% net profit!  Most businesses globally if they are doing well expect to make about 10% profit. Many high volume low margin businesses like supermarkets make profits of 0.5% to 5% except UK supermarkets which make 5-10% as the most profitable in the world.

Ebay have managed to monopolize the online auction / small payment market, hence such high profits. It is interesting that  Amazon who monopolize the book market and have made big inroads into other markets, struggle to make a profit, but my understanding is that they have invested much money into Kindle subsidies and their cloud infrastructure with the view of making bigger profits in the future. As Microsoft, Google, Apple and Barnes and Noble are also heavily investing in this it will be interesting to see who makes the big money here or will there be too much competition, so none of them do?

Not quite sure why you disagree. They are here to make a profit, as said, not a charity.

If you can find somewhere that reaches the same audience for the same cost, please share.  As for Paypal, their charges are pretty much in line with the rest of the industry, around the 5% mark with an added per-transaction fee.


Additionally, I suspect your figures are affected by "one off" events.  But the previous head honcho did a pretty good job of turning ebay around, and has done a pretty good job of getting the usual thick 'tards to only consider egay when buying/selling.

or pay 50p and potentially reach 3 million?
