i did ours today pre-itv (mot). a quick going over with 1500, then 2000, then polish. came up like new

why would you do that by hand?  Just use a Dremel (other multi tools available) with felt pad on low speed and lots of brasso to keep it cool.

You think polishing a large area like a headlight with a Dremel and Brasso is easier than doing it by hand with a decent abrasive? Dremels are good tools for small cutting/grinding/polishing jobs but are hopeless at anything bigger.
I did both my headlights by hand with G3 in about 20 minutes. They were so bad they would have looked at home on a seventies Renault.

I still think a multi tool would be easier than by hand but yes for a large area just get a polishing mop wheel that fits a standard drill say a 100mm diameter one. Easier if you have a flexi drive for the drill. 

Brasso by chance is ideal  to get a mirror finish on plastic almost straight away, no messing with different grade abrasives.  Good for plastic watch faces too.

lol i work at a paintshop .. i used the compressor with the sander then used a full size electric polisher ... took about 3 minutes to do both sides.
