But the local butcher, baker, candlestick maker havent ruined the landscape of the country by appealling to the lowest common denominator and turned all the trads into shopping junkies who clog up the outskirts of every town at weekends & bank holidays by gathering like disciples at the huge shopping centres they have built.
Btw,your starting to contradict yourself now. ::)

and 50 years ago (the era you appear to espouse) I could NOT buy grapes in January, strawberries in December, fresh lychees, 40 different cheeses, 30 different varities of fish etc etc ... if I was lucky the fishmonger "might" have 4 varities, the greengrocer would have "in season" veg and nowhere sold anything but the most popular cheeses.

Hate the supermarkets if you wish, but the large choices, extreme freshness, and CONVENIENCE of it all being under one roof will ensure that they continue to be the places that sell the most. If they were not a success they would not exist .. simple economics.

That 75p screenwash was, I assume, 1L?

If you fill the 6.8L(?) washer bottle then you need to use all of that and more during the winter, especially as it's probably the cheap crap that gels anyway, so it makes the 50p for doing tyre pressures and filling the screen wash seem like a bit of a bargain ;)

Nope it was 5L and I bought 4 of them. they were reduced and displayed at the front door,as a loss leader possibly ?
If my washers get blocked by crap I will just spend a few  minutes putting one of my spare sets on. :y :D

So it's OK to buy something from Tesco that may or may not be a loss leader and that your local independent car parts place couldn't compete on price wise? ::)

Anyway, even so... At 75p you still need to use at least half of that bottle during winter so the 50p still isn't that expensive. I can confirm that the screen wash from those machines is actually mixed quite strong :y

Nope.Local village High st 15 years ago. ;)
You might be able to buy strawberries in December etc. but they tast vile. We buy as much produce from local farm shops etc as is reasonably feasible, mostly due to the fact that the food actually tastes like food should. A joint of beef from a supermarket invariably looks nice  in the shop, but has the taste and texture of an old bicycle tyre when your attempting to eat it.
Its all about the quantity and rarely about the quality with supermarkets ime.

After this thread, I'm never paying for anything anymore.  Quite clearly if I do pay for anything, I'm getting shafted.

No wonder these Supermarkets make Billions per second....... 50p for the convenience of topping up all four tyres on an accurate machine.... Whatever next?

I beg to differ there......veg that is sourced from abroad, can have taken weeks before it appears on the supermarket shelves.....but yes it is convenient or could that be lazy  :-\ ;)

Yep, and it'll have been force grown, picked before it's ripe and stuck under lights to make it look edible. A couple of days in the fridge once you get it home and it's limp and manky.

We've recently started getting veggies delivered in boxes from a local farm and the difference in flavour and shelf life is quite incredible.

I am firmly with Albitz on the subject of supermarkets, we use local shops where ever possible certainly the Baker, Butcher and Greengrocer, you know the people and they sell good produce. Farmers markets are another source of great produce, knowing the chap that bred the beast and knowing that they had a good life is important and you can tell the quality in the taste. Supermarkets are used for the non food purchases like detergents, etc the stuff you used to get from a local shop before the big conglomerates took over and forced the local shop out of business. To be honest our biggest expenditure at supermarkets is the two P's ( Petrol and Peroni ::))
Knowing your local shop keeper is important, your custom is important to him, things not in stock will be obtained for you it is called service.
To get back on topic, I buy my tyres from a small fitter down the road he checks the pressures regularly for free, you don't get that at Tesco  :y :y
