    Hi All, Recently bought my Vectra 3.0 V6 Cdti from Bellinger Vauxhall in Abingdon a few weeks ago, recently I noticed a knocking noise coming from the engine when cold  but this goes once the engine is warm  Took the car to my local vauxhall dealer (Evans Halshaw, Hemel Hempstead) for a free  health check and asked them to do a cold start and see what they think  There report said knocking noise could be either diesel knock (injectors) or lower engine knock  .
    So rang the selling dealer and they took the car in on Monday then rang me Thursday afternoon saying they had been all over the car and didn't think the noise was a problem and given that it was a large V6 engine, there were no starting problems and the noise went when the engine was warm, means there is nothing to worry about  Oh and "Don't forget sir you have an extended warranty" !!! I'm not ConVinced 

    Just wondering if anyone else has experienced any similar knocking noises, particularly from 3.0 V6 Cdti owners 

    P.s this car only has 50,000 on the clock with a full Vauxhall service history

Did they carry out a service for you when you bought it, or is that oil 10k old, assuming it was last serviced at 40k and on a 20k interval...

Could easily have only ever had 2 oil changes

    Cheers Al  well went over to the garage on Friday and spoke to the tech who looked at the car and he said they ruled out lower engine noise after using "listening devices" and said it was injector noise which is unique to that car and that the injectors were working as they should and are not faulty ! Felt i had no choice but to take the car away with me  I asked for there report in writing stating they think there is nothing wrong with the car......"Oh ! the salesman has that and has gone home we will put it in the post first thing Monday" they say. I'm suspicious  Also worried why the salesman knew the cost of injectors (£370 each x6  ) giving me the impression they had considered replacing them..... until they realised the cost !!!! I await there response

In that case I would take the car back and demand either they replace the injectors  or refund entirely the cost of the car as it is "not of merchantable quality" and obviously has a fault which WILL get worse with age and cost you a lot somewhere in the future.

Accept no fob off's.

let me put it this way,   i've been local to that garage for 11-12 years now....


there's a reason i refer to them as Bell-enders.   and don't use them.

A few things could cause it.

I would be less prone to think diesel knock as it would be more evident when under load if it was.

The cold start setup means extra fuel is put in during the warm up phase which does make a diesel noisier, this would then quieten down.

Things to do are:

1) A good service using the CORRECT Gm oil and a fresh oil and fuel filter....this is key, the wrong or cheap oil can give such symptoms.

2) Clean the EGR up, a slight leak can cuase very little power loss but increased noise (never seen this on the 3.0 but have on the Mundeno engines)

3) Bash some diesel magic through it

4) Try some better fuel e.g. not bottom end supermarket stuff (such as Asda/Morrisons)

5) Run with a little 2 stroke oil added to the fuel to helplube the fuel system (about 1 part to 200)

But the car is under warranty.

I would not touch anything on the car and just give back the car to the garage to sort out or refund the money paid.  They must have the worry, not the purchaser.

Thanks for the advice Marks, must admit noise is when the engine is under load ie when accelerating through the gears and goes when she changes up and at low revs, noise not present on tickover.
She has a full vauxhall service history with Bellingers so would hope they have used GM fluids and parts !! And I have only used Shell diesel since buying her, as for working on her not sure this would be a good idea as it may invalidate the network Q warranty I bought with her 
Got the report from their service department in the post (which suprised me !) and it states "injector noise but no concern at present"  So I think service department belive the injectors need changing but sales don't want to foot the bill !
Time to ask for a meeting with the director of Bellingers before complaining directly to Vauxhall

Be interested to know how long you have left on your warranty? If it's a short time left wondering if they're trying to fob you off until it's expired then any time after ''Sir, you need new injectors at £3,000,000.00 each''.

Well I only bought the car about 6 weeks ago so loads of warranty left....But.......... Making a warranty claim so soon after buying her would probably lead to the claim being rejected by network Q saying the car was sold with the fault  And leaving me with a bill for investigations costs which i would be responsible for if the claim is rejected  This is why they have not suggested me making a warranty claim.......Yet  So at the moment I need to push them to rectify this problem !

If it is a network q warranty then you can take it to any dealer. The under load bit makes a major difference to the possible and there are a few vx bulletins relating to this

definitely take advice from mark 

just thinking out loud though isn't diesel knock more prominant on cold starts, mark? just wondering how bad the noise is for gav to be worried that theres a problem.

Already taken her to my local dealer (Evans Halshaw) for a free health check and they suggested injector or lower engine noise But if i put her in under warranty i would be responsible for investigation work costs (Min 6 hours labour) if the claim was rejected ! So i need to push this with the selling dealer even though i have more confidence with Evans Halshaw
