Leaky injectors and fault code 64
« on: 11 November 2012, 13:12:38 »

Hi all, am having some problems with my new purchase.

It's an R reg 2.5TD.

I've decided to do things properly so have bought the car with the dreaded fault code 64. Had I have found this site before purchasing I probably would have given it a miss! I have some ideas as to how to solve this though, am going to try the diesel magic trick first. If that fails I'm thinking it may be possible to make a box of electrickery to spoof the signal from the quantity control check sensor so the ECU thinks all is ok. The car drives fine except for the check engine light flashing and cutting the throttle under certain conditions. If anyone knows more details about the signals to and from the pump this would be very helpful, e.g which wires go to what and what is the range of the signals to and from the quantity control unit, is it just a simple 0-5v or what.

The car also has 2 injectors leaking from the base. Am I right in thinking this is just a case of replacing the copper washer? As these are available very cheaply from my local diesel place.

The injectors that are leaking are numbers 1 and 4. Does anyone local to me perhaps have the tool for removing them that I could borrow in exchange for some beer?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Dave.

Thanks for your reply mate.

I have bought myself a socket and have got some of the sealing washers so am going to sort it out today,

Could you let me know some more details about your contraption, how much was it and where from (PM if you prefer) I wasn't aware such a device already existed so was thinking I'd have to make my own!

Have now sorted out my leaky injectors, the copper washers cost me £5 for 3 from a diesel injection place.

Not too bad a job although it did take me a couple of hours as I removed the inlet manifold for access to the fuel lines.

Am trying the diesel magic trick today.

Would appreciate any further input on the cause of fault 64, if it is the quantity adjuster position sensor then then this is located just under the top cover of the pump.

If I have no success with diesel magic I may have a look in the pump and see if I can clean the sensor, has anyone tried this?

Yes that was the one, Ray did let me know by PM.

My issue is not hot starting which seems to be ok, but the fault code 64 appearing while driving and cuts the throttle.

I will attempt diesel magic and have a look inside the pump before resorting to electronics.

Fault code 64 can only be fixed by a Bosch registered diesel specialist.
There is a sensor at the base of the injector pump this is what throws up code 64.
In the link below scroll down to the 6th photo it can be seen at the base of the pump

When you say it cuts the throttle does the engine stall

The engine does not stall, there is just no response from the throttle until the EML goes off.

My understanding is that the actuator on the bottom of the pump is a timing control device.

I have found this pdf which is about the vw tdi engine, but the omega injection pump is just a 6 cylinder version of the tdi one.

If the timing control actuator was faulty surely the fault code would be more likely to be 34 - injector timing out of range?

The description of code 64 is fuel quantity control out of range, which to me suggests the fault is with the quantity control position sensor, (G149 modulating piston movement sensor in the linked pdf), which is just under the top cover of the pump.

All it will cost me to have a look is a top cover gasket so I will get round to it at some point.
