My son is moving in to his first home at the beginning of Decmber and we are looking for an ISP. I have BT infinity but he cannot get that where he will be living.
Looking for fastish unlimited downloads and he will be doing a lot of xbox gaming online.

Has anyone got any good recommendations please.

I am perfectly happy with Virgin Media for the phone and 60 mega bit Broadband( mind you it seems no quicker than 20 meg but the test sites all come back with 50 +) the TV is freeview, and will be until the BBC lose F1 totally.

I thought  that, to get fibre optic from any provider, BT had to put the cables in first. :-\

Nobody offers unlimited at reasonable speeds, doesn't make financial sense. Those who do offer unlimited at reasonable speeds will ensure the speeds get lowered to reduce the amount you can do  :-X

If you really need unmolested unlimited, BT (and others) will provide ethernet, starts at around £500 a month ;)

What options are available in the area? If its BT IPstream based only thats available, its all much of a muchness. The likes of Zen guarantee unmolested connections, but have a definate download cap, and are definately not the cheapest. OOF is powered by a Zen DSL connection ;)

Ouch, and no not that fast really. thinking around 10-20 meg but unlimted downloads. it s just for a normal couple who like playing online games when they are at home.
It seems like many of the "normal" ISPs like BT and Plusnet etc are going back to download limits. I might advise hinm to wait till the new year and Infinity fibre optic when it is available.

Will go and check out Zen and see if Virgin cable is available.

Thanks all.

Just checked out Virgin. This road was only built 2 years ago and no cable to all the flats and houses there  :o

No ADSL2 or faster ISP will give unlimited (truely unlimited) any more, as the cost per user per month can easily run into the thousands.

Even BT's "unlimited", certainly on fibre, has a FUP, and expect heavy shaping once you go over a 150Gb.  150Gb is a huge amount, no amount of gaming will hit that.

Some business options are high enough to be considered unlimited, but expect to pay £50+VAT a month.

Same as a colleague of mine - he was stuck with ~1.5Mb ADSL and no Virgin on a brand new estate.. He spoke to Virgin and they said it wasn't financially viable to dig up a brand new estate to lay cable, but if the developers had got in touch they could have laid it as it was all built - so he asked the people building the houses why they didn't do that.. and they said they asked Virgin and Virgin never bothered to do anything ;D

He should be able to get Infinity next year some time, when the council finally pays BT to upgrade the last of the cabs  ::)

(And thanks TB, for making the decision for me to avoid going to Infinity over Virgin ;))

It's not that cheap (to new customers anyway) but I use NewNet - I'm on an old package so pay the old rate...  but I get 18mbps through ADSL - in real terms I get about 1.7MB download speeds and totally unlimited.

I generally get through about 100-130gb a month  8)

IMVLE, look for Adsl II in your nearest exchange. Which meant O2 at the time.

Most larger exchanges are ADSL2'd by BT now, as part of 21CN WBC.

O2 still provide a good service, but they are clamping down on heavy users now. TBH, most will try to limit users to a max of 100-150Gb a month, either by being upfront with a cap, like Zen, or by using technology to put in soft limits, like virtually all offering "unlimited".

My brother still has a truely unlimited (with Zen), but this package is no longer available to new customers.
