On the diesels its 100-200 a day hire charge, you pay for fuel, oil and brake blocks its a lot cheaper.

Yes, and then add the annual inspection overhaul costs, followed by 5 year then 10 year mandatory exams with overhaul costs £150,000 upwards for even minor repairs on a small loco, and a Pacific, well name the price; £200/300,000+++! The boiler usually has to be fully stripped down with a complete re-tube, and you start from there to get that precious insurance certificate!

For main line loco's, as you probably know, they have to be maintained to even higher, and more expensive, standards. They MUST have regular steam excursion business to survive. In the future, I fear, many will not
