It when you consider bulk coal of decent quality (good Russian or the harder to get these days Welsh) is aroun 180-200 a ton now!

Blimey!  

And to think on the Mid-Hants Railway, if I remember correctly, the WC Class Pacific loco Bodmin used to use around two tons for about six 20 mile round trips.  As a Trainee Firewoman it was bloody hard work shifting that!

On the diesels its 100-200 a day hire charge, you pay for fuel, oil and brake blocks its a lot cheaper.

I got less than 7mpg out of my Carlton GSi 24v. Mind you that was at Maraham track day!!!!!!! In fact the trip computer went into fault as it couldn't cope with that sort of abuse

Yes, and then add the annual inspection overhaul costs, followed by 5 year then 10 year mandatory exams with overhaul costs £150,000 upwards for even minor repairs on a small loco, and a Pacific, well name the price; £200/300,000+++!  The boiler usually has to be fully stripped down with a complete re-tube, and you start from there to get that precious insurance certificate! 

For main line loco's, as you probably know, they have to be maintained to even higher, and more expensive, standards.  They MUST have regular steam excursion business to survive.  In the future, I fear, many will not

not quite, a 12ton Daf LF

Dropped it back this evening, having got the trip average from about 11 when I got in it up to 14.4mpg inspite of the M25s best/worst efforts incidently, its lifetime average is 13.7mpg over 40k.

Back out in it tomorrow, so Wiltshire had best stay indoors

My old 2.9 12v Granada rarely reached 20mpg around town 8 was typical, if entertaining did make a lovely v6 burbly noise infused with the dulcet tones of whooshing viscous fan and tyre squeal

My old granada 2.9 was pretty good on fuel , £20 gave you half a tank back then

Depends on the line, biggest addition for mainline locos is the OTMR and legacy signaling plus the need for air brakes. If this is already equipped then the only additional is UAT and FTR inspections.....plus the HUGE wear they then suffer!

The boiler repair costs vary as tubes are not to expensive and it depends if you are subbing the work. We just did a boiler overhaul on an 'ugly' which ran to about 25K for tubes, about 50% new stays and welding work plus some new steel. Throw a copper tube plate in and major repair and the costs soon rocket!

One of the most useful additions we have made recently is a set of jacks for lifting locos, it means tyre turning, bogie swaps etc are now much easier and so much cheaper!
