Previous Omega invoices.
« on: 18 November 2012, 17:24:49 »

It seems that previous owners of my MV6 have far more money than I do.

Oil and filter change...new air filter...new pollen filter .... new fuel filter......6 new plugs......all fitted........ £258.36

Supply and fit lambda sensor......£124.52

Supply and fit new exhaust (ATS).....£319.68

Replace front discs and pads ...........£192.56

Replace HBV and add 1 litre of antifreeze....£143.68

Expensive, I think.

Yep, no surprises there! :D

Just proves again how much cheaper it is to do it DIY if possible.  In fact for me it is the only way I can keep the miggy on the road ;)

I've got a Carlton Gsi I've had for 14 years. I brought it from the first owner. total spent in his ownership? 17 GRAND. Total spent in my ownership? 17 pence and a couple of bottle lids.

I've recently seen a quote from the local VW dealership for a track rod end and tracking.... £199. Seriously, where do they get these figures from? And does anyone fall for it??

Last month I drove someone to a Ferrari dealership to pick his car up after it had been in for a service (only done about 1000 miles this year so probably no more than oil and filter) and a full valet, and the bill was over a grand. Although in that case a full Ferrari history probably makes the car worth many thousands more than one with a sketchy past.

To me, 6 months road tax is the biggest single expenditure I expect to have to shell out, mechanical repairs that cost more than that would see most of my cars on the scrapheap!

Well you may have noted on the forum that I've had some trouble with spark leads and a faulty DIS pack.

Would you believe that my friendly Vx parts dealer stated I could no longer buy single plug leads; I could have a set for one bank (three leads) for £123 all in TRADE!!!  So a full set would be excess of £246!!!! :o :o :o :o

I obtained a full set, in nearly new condition, from a Vx breaker I know for £20 + £5 postage, and a DIS pack in excellent condition for £25 + £7 postage 8) 8) 8) :y

They're not cheap, but are not entirely unreasonable. A rough add up means an hourly rate of approximately £60 an hour which seems about right to me. After all, an NGK Lambda sensor is an £80 part, which means a fitting cost of £20. How is that expensive?  I put Pagid discs, pads and rear shoes on a friends Puma this morning and that was £85 in parts with a decent trade discount - realistically that would be a £250 job if it was done at a garage.

If these prices were at a dealer then they're actually pretty good.

I believe that a HBV costs around £35. So £108 to fit it. :o :o

A few weeks later

The guy lost a fortune but he kept the car in top condition regardless of cost.

That top line is about £80 diy Opti, including oil and all VX parts :y

Just a shame that the dealers don't spend any of the other £180 on monkey training ::)
