Facelift 3.0MV6 Miss-fire. Common Causes & Symptoms?
« on: 21 November 2012, 10:51:00 »

Hi there

Just after some pointers before I dive into the engine bay and start pulling things apart.

Facelift 3.0 MV6.

I've owned the car a year and it has happened once before but cleared up within a few hours or driving.

The miss-fire has now come back and hasn't gone away.

1st start in the morning the engine runs smooth as a turbine - drive 1/4 mile down the road and the engine starts missing - as reguar as clockwork it will start to stutter at the same point in the journey every day and will stay rough all day until the next morning start up

1st inspection the foam under the scuttle is sopping wet and looks to be dripping onto the driver side cylinder bank rocker cover -  i've dried the foam out and the plug wells are dry.

This leads me to think that the dis pack may have got water into it - would a leaky scuttle cause the dis pack to get wet?  Though i'm thinking that once the dis pack got wet or started to fail the stutter would be permanent?

It does sound like it's firing on 4 when it stutters - so fits into the idea that a coil on the dis pack is failing ( I understand that there are 3 coils and its a wasted spark set up).

Any thoughts appreicated.

Most certainly ... common fault ... the DIS pack then rusts and starts to fail ....  sounds to me like yours is fine when cold but as it heats up and expands then something is breaking down .. probably a gap is getting too wide somewhere ....

IMHO whip the DIS pack off and examine thoroughly, then get a known good one from one of the breakers here .. :)

I take it the DIS pack is located behind the engine, under the scuttle, and requires more than a casual effort to get at it to inspect?

On 1st inspection I cant see where the heck it is.

What kind of time element are we looking at to remove & refit?

Sounds like the classic "knock on effect"  :'(

Scuttle drips water onto dispack which eventually rusts and splits causing a miss fire.As advised when cold little or no expansion in the casing so for a short time of running it will be fine.

Get it fixed sooner than later as a miss fire will be doing the cats no good at all and will just add to the "knock on effect"

Numerous good write ups on replacing it...just do a search.

Depending on skill levels should remove and replace in 2 hours  :y ,although the cuts will last alot longer ;D

Cheers

I was conscious of the cats getting hammered with the un-burnt fuel so have been using the car as little as possible.

I'll have dig around  for a how to guide.

Cheers.

I'll weigh up whether I have the patients to tackle this myself.

As MV6 in the search brings up numerous previous posts, I decided to pick on the latest MV6 post, Off topic I know but how can an MV6 be automatic? I thought the point of it being an 'MV6' was because it was a Manual V6?

Also check plug wells before writing off the coilpack,if they are full of oil from leaky cam cover seals it'll miss like hell, mine did it and once clear of oil and leads cleaned it was no more trouble :y
