My Bro in law has recently got himself a BMW (not sure of model --- 3 series ??). Anyway, apart from the usual locking nut on one of the 5 studs, there appears to be a large locking nut under the centre cap. Does this sound right ? Or is that part of the wheel and not a connection to the hub? Incidentally, when all 5 wheel nuts are removed the wheel stays firmly in place, leading him to think this centre nut (which does look like a locking nut) IS a locking nut !!!

I had a '02 325 coupe with 18" MV alloys fitted before moving over here. They had no facility for a centre hub locking nut on that model ,the nut you see under the wheel centre cap is the securing nut for the hub.I experienced  the alloy wheel hub  seizing onto the steel hub face on several occassions ,one of which saved it from being stolen and alerted me when the alarm went off after the toerag kicked it to release it. I'd say that you have a seized hub/wheel there ,break it by tapping with a soft headed mallat and piece of wood. When refitting smear some coppaslip on both faces.

yes would tend to agree did disc and pads on a 03 plate yesterday and all alloys were stuck !! gave them a good bootful and off they came ! wire brush hubs and copper grease

Many thanks for those replies --- I thought a central lock nut sounded a bit off the wall    I will advise him to give the beemer (wheels) a good kicking !!!!!
