Today's little mission was to change the HBV(because some clumsy bastard broke the vacuum fitting off it), and replace the broken cambelt cover and cable tray. I've had the new cover for over a year, and found it recently when clearing out the cellar

HBV went well, as I'd fitted jubilee clips when I changed it  last year.

Belt cover came out in 3 pieces, as it was in worse condition than I'd thought. But it turns out that the replacement won't fit as it's a different shape in the lower LH corner. Cue lots of swearing.

So I'm cycling to work tomorrow. And it looks like I'll be fitting the replacement in the dark when it arrives in the week.

I used to do that in my young, silly days, but I never now will work in the dark - I need good light to see anything!

Everything I have done this weekend lol
1st job change tyres to winter ones found at work we have no alloy knock on wheel weights que swearing had to rummage in the bin for the old ones to re use.
2nd job sort out oil leak from upper sump, engine mouting nuts were seized got them off in the end but were tight to the Finnish of the thread went to lift the engine lifting gear was locked in the other workshop and no keys que more swearing had to lift one side and jack the other with transmission stand.
3rd job replace centre trackrod and idler arm, all went well till I came to free off the trackrod ends to do the wheel alignment, damn things were seized and where are the gas bottles and torch ? In the locked workshop que more swearing.
4th job change coolant all ok but made a mess on the floor where it missed the drainer lol.
5th job clean off rusty bits and re coat, not to bad but ye old tin worm have made a pin hole in osf chassis arm que more swearing.
6th job wheel alignment NSF sensor not picked up by camera ? After 20 min realised I got the sensor in the wrong place lol
To sum up wish I never started any of it now I hate cars oh and I found hole in the OS centre box great another job I'm not looking forward to.

That is how we all, well at least me, get at times when everything you touch someone doesn't do what was intended.  I often decide in those cases, as I did very recently, to stop, call it a day, have a nice soak in the bath, eat and drink, watching the TV.

Next day is a new day and by then I have usually decided on my next approach to it all!

Ah now that is a major project, like kitchens.

If we woman have not got a.s.a.p what our blokes promise, heaven help him!

Cars can be left, but never bathrooms and kitchens!

Oh yes, in the past I have done that on a 1986 Carlton, and enjoyed every minute!

Very satisfying once you have replaced the part required (in my case a heater matrix) and put it all back.

Oil change, yesterday. Possibly cracked the spot welded ally housing where the plug sits and now have to drop the sump. Expensive oil change.    Bought £300 + worth of tools for my new 'hobby'. Beginning to wish I hadn't and used that money to pay someone to do it!

When I get started on the project I'll get a thread up - I'm in the parts acquisition stage for now.

As a matter of interest, the matriX can be removed from a Carlton via the drivers footwell - unless it has aircon like that one does!

Mine was an 1986 Carlton without a/c, but I hadn't heard of the 'shortcut' method, so me being game just stripped it all out like with your later model Carlton.  It was fun, so no regrets!

Got it all back together yesterday, after waiting 48 hours to get the replacement cover from Parcelfarce after they pretended to deliver it on Tuesday.
It's now all clean, neat and tidy and the cable tray is firmly secured to the belt cover which it wasn't before.
Plus, the coolant is fresh and good for -30. If it ever gets that cold the car is the least of my worries.
