At the end of the day, crude is priced on a per barrel basis and is set by demand.....the demand for crude is high and people are bidding big bucks ($100+ per barrel) for it.....crude output is also at an all time high.

.....at the end of the day the cost of the fuel in the price you pay is less than 1/3 of the total.....the rest is tax (both fuel duty and VAT on the lot incluidng the fuel duty!) and a small protion for the retailer.

No government wants cheapo fuel because

1) They get less vat
2) They get less corporation tax from BP and Shell

BP and shell are making the money on the crude, not the petrol/diesel which is only a very small part of the chemicals extracted from crude.

Just been on the news petrol could go up to £5 a gallon and Shell and BP have made so many Billion pounds profit

If it's any conselation it's only 50p a litre of diesel in Thailand and slightly cheaper on unleaded .......and that's expensive

at the end of the day this countries resident talk a good fight, but when it comes down to it the attitude changes when challenged to do something, answers like "what can we do?" or " they wont listen to us" or "it'll never change" are heard all over, How many are on this site and others like it, i suggest a petition, not on the government web site but some where else, i will put it up ther e for you all to sign but thats the problem, people in this country have to be lead by the hand, i see it every day in my work, something that takes a couple of mins to do and they wont do it, we could place it up on every site like OOF, links on you own web sites etc. it'l soon fill up.  waddya say, instead of moaning, do something.  other wise its this

I have signed plenty of petitions. They are a great way of venting your spleen but the outcome is always that the powers that be tell you that nanny state knows what's good for you and put all your toys back in to the pram.

The only way to make them listen is direct action, sadly, and with the continual chipping away at freedoms that new labour has presided over no doubt that will now result in 42 days eating porridge.

Judging by the mood of the hauliers at the moment we may not be that far away from it, hopefully. The thing that's missing is unity amongst all road users. If the country could be brought to a halt in the way that France is whenever a group of the populus are unhappy we might get somewhere.

Well the government say they want to help the poor...who is poor, the ones who are working full time...

I work the 16 hours I need to get full working tax credit, have 2 kids so get full child tax credit...child benefit...on low income as a result so additionally get full council tax benefit...all in all your wouldnt believe what it means I'm earning a year for doing next to nothing...oh and I also get free dental treatment (as I'm low paid!!)...all it does in reality is allow me to enjoy my life with very little real effort...I'm not unemployed, pay all my taxes...but hardly an encouragement to work full time and miss out on my free time and my family...I would have to work damn hard (not that I'm scared of doing so) to earn what I get...and I'm not lazy, worked hard all my life until recently...but whose fault is it...the governments...doesnt feel like I have a lot of money, but at least I'm not doing much for it...feel sorry for the teachers working 60 hours a week for the same wage (but still think they should seek alternatives to striking!!)

It grieves me to say this but it's about time we took lessons from the French and started blockading roads/rail/ports and a few riots to bring the country to it's knees. Nothing else is going to work with this effing government because they're just driven by screwing as much money out of us as they possibly can and giving nothing in return.

there has been a media myth for the last decade that brown is a financial genius who has given us the opportunity of living in a land of milk and honey.infact he borrowed mind boggling amounts off money on our behalf in order to create that illusion.this was successful for quite a while because it creates confidence ,and confidence breeds success,particularily in financial sectors.so the country created a lot of wealth.rather than save some of this wealth for the inevitable rainy day it was all spent on "improvement" of services etc,in fact they made so many promises to improve so many things that they had to borrow even more money to attempt to fulfill these promises.now that the economic outlook is not bright and is actually getting darker by the day,they are in the position were they have little option but to increase revenue to pay the bills.they will virtually tax you into poverty and hope that the lies and bluster will fool enough of the people to save their political skins. another rant over

do you only work the sixteen hours to get the full tax credits, or do you work the 16 hours cos it makes you feel like you are providing for your family, we could all get jobs of 16 hours a week but some would rather not rely on the state for to support them that does not make us  mugs, the only reason you are low paid is because it seems to me that you  have what i call the "why should i work all week syndrome, i neither commend nor condemn it but i would rather support my family thru my hard work than rely on the state. :-/
