Insurance Thoughts/Advice Required
« on: 30 April 2008, 15:13:02 »

righty, basically I plan to sell my omega when the insurance is up in september and revert to a dirt-cheap-to-run car for the sake of saving for a house (dont want to sell the omega before that because my insurance is paid up for the full year)

if i got a second car while keeping the omega, can i declare my current no claims on the policy of the new car or will they make me start a new no claims from scratch? (might be using a different insurance company for the 2nd car)

if i wait til september i'll have 2 years no claims, but even if i bought one now i'd have 1 year and its literally only a fiver dearer dependant on insurer

You can only use your NCD on the one policy. If you get a second car & another policy the theory is that you'll have to start your NCD again on the 2nd car. However when I wanted to insure my run-around Astra shed for the 2nd year, because I had full NCD on the Omega MoreThan was prepared to give me full NCD on the second car. Phone & speak to them rather than get quotes from Confused/etc
Or just sell the Omega now & do as my name sake has said!  ;)

thanks for the replies, if i sell th'omega and swap over the insurance, they're not likely to refund me the £400 drop in price are they?

done some car hunting and number crunching this afternoon and i might just be better off keeping the omega and not getting the cheapo til it sells after september, the omega is now costing me less than £20 a week in fuel thanks to the LPG anyway (was £35 on petrol) so really i suppose i'm not gonna lose money by keeping it...

They won't give you the full £400  as they'll insure the "old" car under "part year" rates .. which are more expensive, then they'll charge you an "Admin" fee ...

Do you have the KY handy ??

not putting a second car on the road might be the better option then, once i do changeover i'll keep the omega on the girlfriend's drive til it sells!

I think you will be no better off with a smaller car unless you LPG it or get a tractor.

not counting fuel, the all round maintainence costs would drop too, tax and insurance are low, i might even take the 1.0 Eco route and get 57mpg on petrol and £35 a year tax, with half the price insurance than i'm paying now, and a chain driven engine

I was trying to run two cars last year, the meega for cruising, holidays and clean jobs and the other one (a reet banger) for tools, dirt and city journeys.

I told various insurance companies that as I could only drive one car at a time please could they cover both. and not to worry about theft of the banger as it would be covered by house insurance being worth nothing!

as others have said, they only would allow my NCD on one policy and the other vehicle would start from scratch with 0 NCD. making a £200 car cost at least £500 in insurance! (MoreThan have always been very nice to me on the phone and quite happily asked for nearly double other insurers quotes, so i stay away!!!)

Basically the only way to do it was to get a trade policy. Being a part time valeter is justification as motor trade! so my nan pays me to wash her car......hehe  :y However then i looked into it and found there are loads of extras missing on a trade policy (like courtesy car), the excess is higher and  it was still about double just insuring the omega alone.

so i scrapped the banger, invested in a couple of cloths to keep the mig clean and am coming up to a £411 renewal for it...  :y

the other way is to insure online and change car details online before you drive, not sure how often you can do it but i think in theory it's possibly to chop and change motors - paying the policy of the higher one of course!

Vectra Elite Estate doing good post-Omega service but still not as nice to sit in.

One last Omega on the drive, one Corsa on the lawn...maybe they'll go to a good home before too long!

Many insurers charge an "admin fee"  everytime you change, as they have to issue a new certificate. These fees can be quite high ... mine is £20 (its in the small print in the documentation) - I only found out about it when I changed the car .. :(

You should'nt need a courtesy car ...... you have 2 cars!!  ;)  ;)  ;)

My diseasal Astra is intended to be exactly as you wanted to do. the Omega is around £400 per year to insure & the 2nd year's renewal was about £250 for the Astra. I just need to get the f***er running again now ..... it died on Monday night with a FULL tank of diesel!  :(  :y
