Maybe a dumb question... what does that little snowflake button actually do?

I'm guessing it tries to reduce wheel-spin on ice?  :-\

It reduces the torque from the gearbox by "locking out" first and second gear.

In other words, the car pulls away in 3rd with lots of slip from the Torque Converter, which gets the ATF nice and warm ::) :y

It also disengages automatically above 30(?) mph ;)

this snow button I used only once in many years (later I discard the stupid autobox anyway) .. as I generally use winter tires..
 
but TC off is more useful.. especially when you are stuck in sand, mud and snow..

you know what they say . there' s drivers who need that button , and those who don't.  ;D ;D
