Howdy folks....
I have been searching the forum, and have found something from 2008 possibly on the subject....
For those of you who have seen the pedal trick vid, whoever is doing it exclaims about a noise that starts up. Searching leads me to believe its the self levelling pump. I am getting this noise regularly. However, I have been told I do not have self levelling shocks fitted. Should I have ?
Or...am I on the wrong track and its to do with levelling headlights ? Also, if the shocks are not self levelling, do the headlights compensate if carrying a load ?
I would add, its not just on startup....it can appear at any time.....sounds a bit like a fast drumm roll
Oh, btw....its on my 2001 2.6 Elite Estate....don't seem to get it on my 2.5 Elite Estate ( that has self levelling shocks fitted)

It probably still has the pump, even if someone has swapped the shocks.

If the shocks are self levelling, just pull the relay (small one under steering wheel). Check the headlight main beam after, as that relay is identical

Elites have self levelling as standard . so I would expect it to be there unless removed. "fast drum roll" is what mine sounds like.

Pump is in behind the front drivers wheel well .. remove the front inner liner and its up behind the headlight.

There is a fuse for it .. try pulling that and see if the noise ceases ??

If you have self levelling shocks they have an airline attached about 2/3rds the way up ...

self-levelling rear dampers have small 3mm air lines plumbed in to them. Easily seen underneath the rear of the car.

yes thats me in the video, and that noise is the self levelling pump.

sounds like you have a leak. either disconnected annd venting to atmosphere, or a leaking pipe.

Yes fellas, my 2.5 has the levellers and the air lines attached. The 2.6 does not. I assume that the airlines must be hanging loose somewhere. So I assume if self levellers are fitted in the future again, it will be just a case of refitting the airlines
The drum roll is as you say, near the drivers side wheel If its not causing harm, I may let sleeping dogs lie, or as TB says, pull the plug

Relay is a 5s job. 1s to pull the relay, 1s to test full beam, 1s to replace the relay as you realise you've pulled the wrong one, 1s to pull the right one, 1s to test full beam again.

You say that the pump is running all the time...  When the system is working correctly, the pump only runs until the rear has been raised to the correct height, then turns off.  This is controlled by the sensor.  I suspect that as you no longer have S/L shocks fitted, the sensor is constantly wanting the ride height raising.

I would definately pull the relay as suggested, otherwise you run the risk of burning the pump out.
