Rear windows - a mind of their own?
« on: 17 December 2012, 12:59:21 »

Hello, and thank you to anyone who can point me in the right direction.

I have just brought an Omega 2.5 Ltr petrol, CD estate - without an owners manual -  and as you do, when I stopped to fill up with petrol on the way home after the purchase, I just had to see what all those buttons did!

I got to the leccy windows, and using the buttons on the drivers arm rest, the front and back went up and down, no problem. The drivers side rear went down ok, and came up again with a bit of a fiddle at the switch. The Passengers side rear came down ok, and stayed there! The switch was wiggled and twiddled, poked and prodded, and finally shouted at - the window stayed open. Thinking I was being clever, I went out and opened the back door to close it using the switch on that door. Nope, the window stayed open. I sat down back in the drivers seat, contemplating a 50 mile drive up the motorway with the window open, when I noticed what looked like a small switch between the front and rear window switches on the drivers arm rest. I pressed it on the one end and tried the jammed window - nothing. I pressed the switch on the other end, and then in the middle - nothing. Then I realised that the switch actually slid from left to right. So, I slid it to the right, and the drivers side rear window went down - so I closed it - but the nearside rear would not move. I slid the switch to the left, and the nearside rear window still would not move! I slid it back to the right, and the drivers side window came down again???

Any way, I slid and pushed (and closed the drivers side rear window) and slid and pushed again, then in frustration I opened the nearside back door again, pulled the switch - and result - the window closed!

I am assuming that there might be some combination of switch placings which allow the windows to be controlled, or more likely, that the switch pack on the drivers door needs to attention or replacing. So can anyone here help a newbie out?

Thanks for reading, and also thank you in anticipation of some good advice, Richard.

The little toggle switch is the rear window isolation switch .. in one position it allows the rear windows to be operated from the rear switches (adult mode) .. in the other it prevents the windows being opened from the rear, but allows them to be opened from the front (child mode).

For fault diagnosis I would suggest having them "active" from all positions to avoid confusion !

The intermittent nature of the one window could be a few things, but something worth checking is the wiring loom goes from the door into the pillar by the hinges .. it is not unknown for the wires to chafe and wear which leads to broken or shorting wires.

HTH, and welcome to the forum  :y :y :y

Had this on my car a year or two back, i disconnected the battery for a few minutes, then reconnected the battery.
Try this then reset all the windows and sunroof.
Worth a try to start.

Sounds like either a problem with the switch panel (check it's plugged in properly) or a wiring fault (usually in the umbilical).

I have spare switch panels if needed...
