Well now that the outrage bus is nicely full .... has anyone actually "researched" the matter ??

The EU regulations on fish size were brought in very simply to prevent overfishing of immature stocks ... if the fish is too small it cannot be sold and therefore should not be caught... pretty simple idea really, allow young fish to grow and breed before being caught.....

The fishermen were "supposed" to use nets with larger mesh so as to allow the smaller fish to escape.

But they don't.

They still use the old nets and throw away the small fish, which are now damaged and die, and now they use that argument to have unrestricted fishing again ... and it looks like many have fallen for the idea .. nice sound bite ....

What should be done IMHO is all those fishermen using the smaller sized nets should have those nets confiscated and destroyed, and anyone caught a second time has the boat confiscated as well.

Cut the greed of the fishermen and actually conserve the fish stocks.

but it's SO much easier to "blame" the hated EU ... isn't it ???

Its not only the size of fish....they have to throw back any fish caught that is not the type on the quota they are fishing for. Meaning that if they are after cod and they get loads of haddock, it goes back, whatever size. They are not allowed to land it.
Surely MAFF do checks on net sizes etc?

If you want to blame anybody on this....go back to Ted Heath :y

Exactly the point. The quotas are the real problem.  >:(
