Hi Everyone,

Christmas cheer to all. Now I have 2.2 Auto petrol. Its giving some probs so any advice would be appreciated! First when from cold its starts ok then hesitates, splutters and has difficulty going over 3000 rpm so I have to pedal to the floor. Once warmed its better but not right, it feels as if it has a lean mixture. The emission light is on and the read outs are:

02 Sensor open circuit (replaced this with a new one and it lasted 49 miles)

Lean mixture bank 1

Missfire detected cyl 4

TPS stuck ( that was good just pulled out and it wouldn't go above a very weak 2000rpm, switch off and start cleared it)

Replace the coil pack and still naff. When its been standing for about and hour or so after a run its a pig to start. Backfire, missfire, stalls I have feather the throttle for about 3 mins and still its not very good. Hesitates above 3000rpm even when warm. This could be the weak mixture, however, 16.9MPG and 1litre of oil in 1500 miles, no visible oil leaks or smoke from the exhaust. This has got worse over the last 10 days. Sometimes you can feel it miss on tick over when warm. Apart from scrapping it any ideas any one?

2.2 engine is prone to cam sensor failure which would give the symptoms you are getting,I'm surprised you don't have that code showing

Thanks for that. I don't suppose a cam sensor off a v6 would fit??? I have one from old Vectra.

Could also be a MAF sensor problem, IMHO. It would be good to get it to a tech 2 and have a look at the live data.

Actually, could well be worth trying to start it with the MAF sensor disconnected, and see if it's any better. This will raise other fault codes, of course, but it should revert to estimated values for air flow, which might improve matters.

In addition, it'd be worth cleaning out the breathers and throttle body, and checking for any intake air leaks.

Indeed, that is what recently reduced my V6 to a lumpy tractor!

MAF reading at hot idle would be interesting, as well as the fuel trim values and a look at the O2 sensor activity to ensure that they are switching every second or so at idle once it's hadn a minute or two to warm up.

Have a good look over everything else to make sure it looks plausible, so temperature readings (especially coolant temperature) and so on.

You suppose correctly - v6 one no good for a 4 pot

I disconnected the MAF and its not made alot of difference starting after an hour or so BUT it's not jerking as much as it did. I will leave disconnected tomorrow and see what happens. Cheers for the info on live readings I will report back at the weekend as to what I find. Its rather like driving a 4 wheeled flat spot at the moment. Oh yes, with the MAF disconnected the fuel consumptions about 22 mpg instead of 16.9 mpg. Shame about the v6 cam sensor not fitting, where abouts is it on the 2.2?

behind the timing belt cover at the top of the engine...you can see the wiring connector going into the top front of the engine where the front of the cam cover is
