Ford Sierra Alternator
« on: 29 December 2012, 10:26:35 »

Morning all,
Another fault with my Sierra,  (may be time to ditch it!)
Battery light has just come on and dims when revved-could it be the diode pack in the alternator?

Regards

Steve

More likely to be the regulator / brushes. Rectifiers rarely fail.

Strip it down and if the windings and commutator look in decent condition refurb it with a new regulator and / or brushes and perhaps a pair of bearings. :y

Tho with all the rain we've been getting (its chucking it down here atm) I wouldnt be suprised if its got water in it.....and thats causing the problem...If not then KW is most likely correct  :y

Actually, I would go diode pack. The setup used in them is not to clever and the diodes can become unbonded and fail on these earlier generation alternators

Thanks all,
Had a look this morning in between the rain-measured voltage at battery with engine running-showed just over 12v so alternator looks kaput. I'll take it off and have a look at the diode pack and regulator.

Cheers
