Underground
« on: 11 January 2013, 11:10:56 »

Ok, I waited and waited, but no one commented yesterday about an historic anniversary.

I thought I was starting to get some of you petrol heads interested in history! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Anyway, yesterday was the 150th anniversary of the first London (World) tube train run between the two new stations of Paddington and Farringdon Road on the Metropolitan, which was commemorated by a steam hauled train as it would have been at the beginning.

The London Underground grew, and with the CrossRail link is still growing! :y :y :y

Imagine a London without the Underground now.  It would be chaos in the streets, and the financial centre which is London would probably not exist!

It was a truly marvellous achievement and a revolution in public transport that other countries copied. ;)

I note that the special trips with Sarah Siddons and the steamer were the most expensive public rail journey per mile in the UK ever!

The underground is fantastic, no arguments there, but it has also bred laziness and a complete lack of geographical knowledge in London ;) People (as a general rule) just automatically get on the tube to get from A to B when it can easily be walked in a few minutes (Liverpool Street to Bank for example) ::)

It can also be expensive for a group of 4... I used to go from Liverpool Street to Clerkenwell with 3 others (2 of them didn't walk too well either) and when I priced it up a Black Cab worked out the same price and more convenient as we got dropped on the doorstep instead of having to walk from the nearest station ;) I actually prefer to walk most of the time when in town :y

That said, it does make getting into the City nice and easy for us... Park at one of the stations on the outskirts and get the tube in :y That said, if there's 4 of us it can be cheaper (and often quicker) to drive in and park at one of the station car parks in the city :y

The day before yesterday's Google Doodle was (part of) the iconic London Underground map.. so anyone who used Google ought to have noticed it was the anniversary .. well, if they clicked on the Doodle to find out what it was in aid of, anyway  :y

God the older I get.................I'll say no more! ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::)

We call it, Electric Worm or Slow Worm. Think modern Londoners call it Metroski.
