france and fuel
« on: 15 January 2013, 18:31:49 »

Its cheaper over there i believe, however the thought of landing in calais at midnight and not being able to fuel up is a concern.
Read reports of credit card machines not working and other strange things.
they seem to be few and far between on the motorways?

experiences??

On motorways, fuel is generally at every other services, and services are generally around 15km apart.

Similar price to hear on French Motorways.

Supermarkets are cheapest, normally, although most are unmanned, and card payment only.

For the few pence you'll save, it ain't work landing in Calais on vapours. Leave a few gallons in, and then no issues.
France petrol prices vary a lot. Motorways most expensive.
On motorways the prices are displayed a few km before the services normally and also the prices of the next services after.

Petrol in france is about the same price as hare. If you smoke then nip up to bellygum for some fags and petrol is a bit cheaper Luxembourg is cheaper still.,also most fuel stations want payment before filling up,hypermarches are cheap for fuel.

I had mixed experiences with fuel on my last trip from England. Arrived late at night. Tried an unmanned motorway services and couldn't get any fuel.

Overnighted at Rouen and next morning went to the Carrefour supermarket services and filled up with cheap fuel. Again the services were unmmanned till nine a.m.. When I got back home I found I had been debited for the fuel and then ten minutes later a straight 100 euros. My Spanish bank immediately refunded the money- skimming machine? who knows.

I would go with the advice of taking a few spare gallons with you rather than arriving empty.  You can cover a lot of miles in the time it takes to stop, fill up or not......

At night only, which I realise is when you plan to arrive.

Like UK, prices in France vary.

Luxembourg is state priced, so same everywhere.

I drive to France quite frequently.

I have had problems paying by card at unmanned stations. I now always fill up in the UK.

Getting fuel on French motorways not usually a problem, frequent easy to use stations but of course more expensive.

Off the motorways is highly variable, a bit dodgy at smaller stations which are not big brand like Esso, Shell etc.

Overall cost is not much different, not worth getting stranded for.
