They are reducing numbers of boots on the ground by 20% in my Force area and it is the older more experienced men (those with 20yrs + pension entitlement) going first! This is just another nail in the coffin for 'proper' Policing in the name of reducing budgets. Say what you will about the Police (and i've said my share) but they are an essential Service we all call on when the chit hits the fan and we all lose if they are not supported by both Government and us the Public at large.

The police force is like any other organisation. There are good coppers, bad coppers and downright useless coppers. The trouble with the present government's policies is that it will turn all coppers into apathetic coppers.

Police? Policies? Have to look into the connection between those two words.

I learnt today that there will be 7 pay scales instead of the existing 10, and it will mean pay rises will transpire at a quicker rate with £36K PA for the best PC's.

The Police Union seem to accept all this.

I agree though, the bobby on the beat deserves every penny they can earn.

My nephew is a serving copper in the the north yorkshire force and has gained the rank of detective sargent.
Without going into too much detail he is helping to put away kiddie fidlers.
He has told me that the entire force is so low on moral that 60% are almost at the point of jacking it in, because the force and many others are so pre occupied with leauge tables and budget cuts that it undermines what they are trying to do.
They get no back up from the polticians and the the goverment, and are made to look the bad guys at every turn when they start kicking up a fuss.
Pay is not always the be all and end all of the subject but the job is everything to 99% of the boys in blue.

I for one could not do that job as i would kick the crap out of every scum bag out there and end up in jail no better than them, the police nick em and the courts slap there wrists and send them back out to re offend
Eventually the coppers dont bother to nick em as they will be on the streets before they have finished the reams of paper work they have to do.

no and that is what being,anyone WITHOUT police experience is being paid £19,000 pa....which is good money...anyone WITH police experience be it PCSO,TRAFFIC WARDEN.OR SECURITY GUARD you will be starting  on £ 22,000

Maybe I am the only one to think it, or out of touch maybe, but 19k does not sound like a great deal of money to me.
Maybe in some lower cost areas of the country, but not everywhere.

Furthermore, other employers, who may not be willing to pay "green behind the ears" employees this much money, may also not be subjecting their employees to such dangers and anti-social working conditions - i.e. dealing with criminals, drunks, RTAs, violence, insulting behaviour, etc etc etc.

I agree with OOMV6. You can't say to a murderer you've just confronted "Don't shoot, I've only just started in the job". The risks are just the same. Ask the families of the two young women constables who went to attend a 'domestic' in Manchester recently.
