Does your windscreen blower suck?
« on: 15 January 2013, 21:53:38 »

By comparison with pretty much any other car, my Elite Omega is and always been utterly crap at clearing the windscreen.

With the blower on full, set at High with a warm engine, the clear part creeps very slowly up the screen?

Was this model designed with bad airflow or is there a problem with my car?

I have reset the internal bits countless times and it makes no difference.

Thanks for any help.

I think mine clears pretty quickly considering the huge glass area it is working on. FRom cold, blowing cold air on to glass is never going to clear it quickly, from warm it only takes a few seconds.

Are you running the air con at the same time ?? It will clear faster with air con ON as the air will be drier, once the system is on song .. again .. a warm start rather than a cold one.

A blocked or waterlogged pollen filter will restrict flow. Check the scuttle well is not full of water and the pollen filter is good.

The other common issue is that the vents in the boot (driver's side, in the first aid box cubby hole on a saloon) are blocked with junk in the boot.

Mine is much better since I cleared the scuttle and replaced the pollen filter  :)

Hi,

I have reset the blowers countlessly, the pollen filter is new and there is no water in the scuttle.

The vents in the boot interest me. There are two black plastic things that look like fan housings with vanes attached to the rear wing metal inside the first aid compartment, but they are not fans and there is no hole in them. I have never worked out how they're supposed to work.

I can't find a single image online of the vent, or discussion about it other than 'check the vent'.

I think they have a rubber flap behind them. When the blower blows air in at the front, these open to let it out at the rear, but the flap stops crud getting in. If air can't get out, it won't be blown in effectively.

Might be worth checking from the outside that they aren't caked in mud.

with the fan speed at high, have you checked the windscreen vents are blowing equally as the face/leg vents? im sure if it was the pollen filter then it would restrict airflow in all directions and not just specifically towards the windscreen  :-\

Yep, and also bear in mind that the flaps that direct the airflow to the various outlets are vacuum driven, and a leak in the system can stop them working.

When you say check from the outside... er... where? In the wheel arch?

Thanks for all your help.

Is there a fairly easy way to check the vacuum pressures are correct, to rule that out?

If I put my hand in the airflow at the front of the screen, it is mildly strong - difficult to explain, but not what I would expect from a windscreen blower. The air can't be felt by my hand at more than about 1/5 up the screen if that makes sense.

The vents exit up under the rear bumper. :y

Best thing to do iin the first instance is to change selection from floor to screen, etc. and see if you can hear the flaps moving and feel the difference in airflow.

Call me mental if you will, but I've just wandered back to the car to have a look at the 'vents' again and both are solid plastic that don't budge at all and there's no rubber portion that might flap open.

They are about 10cm by 8cm by about 3-4cm thick and about 5cm apart, bolted to the outer metal behind the compartment flap.

I took a picture which I'll try to upload this evening.

Is there some kind of motor which does something to them? I jiggled them hard to see if there was any movement and there was nothing. They just look like they are fixed to the car.
