Water Pump change?
« on: 27 January 2013, 23:45:00 »

Just read that the water pump on a V6 is run via the auxiliary belt so when getting the timing belt done on a V6 I assume I do not need to get the water pump done, which on a 4 put needs to be done. Is this right?....... :)

You don't have too Vamps but whilst there doing the cambelt its easy to change it  :y
If you decide to do it at a later date everything has to be stripped off again like doing the cambelt to do it again... if that makes sense

There have been a few issues with new water pumps failing early recently. Not sure if I'd change one on a V6 as a matter of course these days. :-\

I've had one (admittedly pattern) where the sealing rubber O ring perished after 2 weeks. Others have had genuine GM pumps fail after similarly short lifetimes. The original one from my car was still in fine fettle after 120k miles, so I certainly wouldn't bother until the next cam belt change at 160k if I had my time again.

Of course, if you're paying labour to change it it's more than an hour of your time wasted if it does then fail later... But the same could be said if the new one fails early.

Agreed, on a 4 pot it forms one of the cam belt idlers so must be done with the belt.

We were talking about the V6 though. ;)
