Our goverment want to sent 250 of our troops to Mali ,as non combat,only to train their army. I wonder how long it will take before they get involved in combat against the rebels.
My own thoughts are let the Africans sort their own problems out.

I read elsewhere that this in no way flies against Cameron's pledge that there will be no "boots on the ground"

He won't be supplying them with boots...

Unfortunately, if we are not prepared to police the world in our strategic interests then we accept the consequences, by strengthening the hand of the religion of peace. This has spilled on to London streets once and would have more times, but through luck and the skill of our security services.

Thin edge of the wedge Mind you have we enough troops for a fully blown conflict in North Africa, but there is a lot of OIL & GAS.

I'm coming round to the idea that we should take the fight to the likes of Al-Qaida, it affliates and the Taliban where ever they are.  We should hunt them down like rats and eliminate them as they hate us and would see us living under sharia law where fun, music, dancing and many cultural activities are outlawed and our women go round in sheets and our daughters live in the shadows as uneducated slaves... 

We should be proactive in this struggle and not wait for them to hit us 9/11 style!    For sure it's a struggle that will take decades and will cost much in blood and treasure, however it's fight that we cannot shy away from, on the pretext that because it's happening in a far off desert it wont affect us.     If we want our children and grandchildren to enjoy the same sort of liberty and freedom the we have enjoyed it has to be done!   If we sit on our hands and do nothing for sure they will come for us... 

Cameron is in Algeria today with the head of MI6 and the National Security Advisor.

Islamic fundamentalism is a real threat to the civilised world.It has already become deep rooted in many countries in the "free world",(as well as countries in the middle east and Africa),perhaps none more so than the U.K.
It needs to be combated somehow.So maybe we either shut down all travel to and from countries it eminates from and let them get on with it,or fight it wherever it tries to gain a foothold ?
Not sure tbh,Im no expert on such matters,but I fear that so far we are losing the battle,due at least in part to political correctness,and being petrified of any accusation of racism/ Islamaphobia no matter how unfounded or illogical.

But that is what the USA and the UN generally have been doing since 9/11/2001.

The USA in particular bombed the crap out of the mountains in Afghanistan, and have had ground troops fighting with all other UN soldiers to date.  The USA of course achieved their ultimate goal and killed Bin Laden to weaken greatly the Al-Qaida, and everyone is trying now to fight the Taliban.

So surely TigerHayes the fight has already been taken to these terrorists / Islamic fundamentalists, but now the West is running out of money / public support and hoping the locals can carry on the fight. We shall see!!

However how many of the terrorists are among us?  That is THE real problem.

Problem is "The West" cannot be everywhere and do everything ... each nation must stand up to these terrorists themselves.. all we can do is give support.

This is true (ideally).They were centred in Afghanistan,but then seemed to move to Indonesia,now popping up in North Africa.
The Arab spring has alot to answer for imo.Seems to me that part of the world hasnt yet got past the stage where it needs a strong ruler who wont take any crap from the various tribes.Once they are removed,a vacuum is created and gets filled by every moron with a gun.
Terrorism is unfortunately a very difficult thing to combat.It can be be trying to nail jelly to the celing,but if we ignore it we will be overrun by fundamentalism eventually.
I also think we should be doing more to stamp it out in the U.K.
