Hi Guys ,went out this morning and started the Car and it was Missing drove it round the corner turned it off restarted it and it was fine left it running for 1/2 an hour (still fine) left it for about 1 hour started it up and misfire is back and wont go ,Just to add that engine management light has been on since I got the car but now (since misfire) has started to flash when running ,any help greatly appreciated ,thanks Mark  car is a 2.2 CDX Estate 2001

Exact same thing happened to mine just before Christmas . New spark plugs and coil pack was needed.

If the EML is flashing, it is warning of imminent damage to the Cat iirc

Basics first!

Check plugs for oil/water, then get a code reader on it & go from there. Don't go replacing or buying new parts yet

just re-read the OP's message as missed the ''flashing light'' bit.

a flashing EML means somethings very wrong as far as i know. get those codes read first!

Hi Guys ,thanks for the Input ,I'm afraid I do not have a Code Reader so will be off the Road as I do not want to damage the Cats or anything else for that matter  ,thanks anyway

Please don't take my post as  being doomladen! A flashing EML does warn of potential cat damage IF you continue running the engine with an incorrect fuel trim, however, the cars ECU will stop fuel delivery to the effected cylinder injector so it's not as bad as it sounds! Unlike a V6 which will still run (after a fashion on 5 cylinders), a 2.2 will be such a pig to run on 3 cylinders that you won't even want to try to!
As others have said, the first thing to check is water or oil seepage into the plug wells. the 4 pot is prone to getting Waterlogged plugs due to a leaking scuttle allowing rainwater etc to run through the joints and directly below the lowest point is the Coilpack multiplug and the plastic Ecotech cover over the coilpack and plugwells, and this is where it ends up, usually in plug no.4 (nearest the windscreen)!!! Ditto for a leaking camcover gasket, this dumps oil into all four plugwells and if allowed to sit there, will gradually bugger up the coilpack rubber plug covers and cause a misfire! The good news is that either of these problems is an easy fix & do-able by you with the help of the relevant 'How to's' in the Maintenance Section of the Forum.

Well already had the Rocker Cover Gasket as the Breathers where Blocked and it was Leaking Cleaned the Breathers Out yesterday while it was misfiring ,anyway went out this morning and took the Coil Pack Off only to find that the Cylinders were the Plugs go where FULL of Oil so much so that you couldn't even see the Plugs  so got all the oil out and cleaned everything TWICE !!! and Put New Rocker Cover Gasket on and when I restarted the Car No Misfire  so it it Just remains to see wether or not I have cured the Oil Leak only time will tell I spose as the Engine is Covered with oil anyway  so I will Just keep an eye on the Level ,thanks for your Input / Help Guys all the best Mark
