Sad B*stard with a chamois!
« on: 31 January 2013, 14:06:38 »

After a couple of weeks of snow, sleet and grit, the old Omega is in a right state. Inside is the same story with a couple of weeks of kids snow and mud covered wellies being dragged all over my beige carpets and leather.

The question is; is it pathetic that I am looking forward to spending most of my Saturday cleaning and polishing it and is it a reflection of my sad and empty life that this will possibly be the highlight of my weekend?....apart from watching Saints in glorious HD in their opening game of the Super League Season on Saturday evening that is.

Photos of a gleaming old Omega to follow this weekend….

Sad we can't trust anyone to do a decent job, perhaps...?

Locally, I've done the rounds and found a place I'm happy with. Hand washed, clean inside £15. There are cheaper but unsatisfactory establishments.

If I had nout better to do, I'd do it myself, but its a false economy to spend that much of my time cleaning cars when there's other stuff to do for most of this week, now the weather is better.

If the weathers crap, I have time to clean the car, but its pointless doing so. Sigh.... :)

I normally do it myself but age and infirmity are creeping on, especially this time of year (cold) So we bit the bullet and took both cars to the local garden center where part of the car park is a cleaning area run by europeans.
Only had the outside done. £6 per car and we walked round the plants and had a coffee in the cafe while it was being done.

Not a bad job at all. Yes it is only a quick wash but it looked good, and they did all round the door shuts. I would use them again.

The automatic car wash is cheapest and quite good if you cant physically do it yourself , what i find strange is the pre wash the car by hand before entering  ::) i would rather they just quickly shammy wet bits of the car on exit though and they keep the free air freshener  ::)

Must admit mine goes through the local car wash too - although with the Elite spoiler on the back of the estate the top 4" of the rear window never gets washed..

I think they pre wash, so they can inspect the vehicle prior to automatic washing. Damage can be spotted before blame applied. Grit can be removed before is scratches and causes swirls. ...in theory.

Practice, I've yet to encounter an automatic car wash that doesn't leave swirls in the paint. This shows up badly in sunlight, ESP on a black car. :(

I stopped using car washes about 5 years ago when a car got damaged that I did not see at the time, only noticed a few days later, to late to go back; thinking about it I think they noticed...  :-X

As a result I came to use the local 'minority ethnic' hand car wash that is always busy, they do a really good job, whatever the weather.......... :y :y

As to the OP's original question.... no I don't think it's sad. Some people find it relaxing. My mum likes to paint (as in decorating). And my g/f likes to sew. YOU enjoy what YOU enjoy... don't let any fekker tell you otherwise ;)

I've been called sad (mostly in jest) for looking forward to working on the car, but this is something I really enjoy...except doing my brakes last week it was so windy light objects were flying around everywhere  >:(

As for cleaning personally, I don't like doing it. I pay the local Polish who set up in the Homebase car park. £10 and they do a real good job while I go for a coffee. However, I'm not washing her 'til I've fixed her. That will be her treat for being good  :y
