MotherT's ongoing search...
« on: 16 February 2013, 10:04:02 »

Well, MotherT has become quite the test driver. Been looking at lots of new Estates, reason being is she wanted something newer and something that did not require so much regular TLC.

Exhaust broke on it, but due to my commitments in London time to get back was an issue. So took longer to fix, in the end it went into town to be done  ::)

She's driven, looked and had good nose over:

Mercedes C Class Estate
Mercedes E Class Estate

Audi A4/A6 Estate

Vauxhall Insignia Tourer

Ford Mondeo Estate

Nissan Qashqai +2
Nissan X-Trail

Range Rover
Range Rover Sport

Volvo V70

And after all of those? Nothing matches what we have in the Omega in terms of features, comfort & space.

She likes Audi A6 most, as that drove the best for her, she liked the fact it did not wallow around like some of the others. But for a £25k car, it does not come with memory seats. Something we use fair bit on the Estate.

So for now Estate is staying, maybe in a few years the XF Sportback might be in our price range  :)

Out of that lot and given the needs I would return to the Volvo and try and get all the bits for a good price.

Think she had a bad Volvo, 17k miles in 12 months, get feeling it was abused.

Service costs of the Volvo were surprisingly high though  :(

I would definitely revisit the Volvo plus a closer look at Mondeo and see what warranty extensions I could get. Dealers are offering full warranties for additional years and can be pushed.

Best value for money opportunities would be Volvo and Mondeo given Insignia too small.

I am aiming for one of those zafira tourers, but not new of course. The top of the range ones look great.

Yes some  Zafira specs are great but this issue of not getting the lifetime warranty because it is second user is disappointing but dealers are responding to wingers like me and especially you who stick to the objective. Zafira could be a possibility then Tunnie

I think there is quite a difference in the new tourer as opposed to common or garden zafira which, of course, will be reflected in the price. They are producing both together because the zafira is very popular but not many would upgrade to the tourer at about five grand more.

E series would have got my vote, with the proviso

"mercs are a great car to drive, but not a great drivers car,"

servicing is easy, parts are relatively cheap, engines are brilliant depending on which one,
will rack up huge mileages with just basic maintenance, depreciation if buying new is bad!!

Have to say that I've been very impressed with the service from the Merc dealers when I've needed bits for my C250 and as said the prices were reasonable as well.  £18 for a genuine cam cover gasket!  :y

No idea on spec but the sportbrake is a thing of beauty IMO.

Is it just me, or are the only cars catching my eye on the roads these days all Estates...?
Honda Accord
Mondeo
Even the German ones. :o ...and the gay insignia Estate looks good too, except for the ridiculously large rear bumper.

Actually, the Accord is worth a look Tunnie. :)
