TOP GEAR Mustang
« on: 17 February 2013, 12:34:34 »

Now I bet someone is going to say "we've seen that already X days ago", but last night TV was crap and I found myself watching that testerone fuelled programme, Top Gear.

Anyway, they were all having one of their "races", but last night with a difference. Two, James May ( :-* :-* :-* :-*), and the Hamster were going by public transport from Wembley  Stadium to Milan Stadium in Italy, whilst Jeremy Clarkson went by car to the same place.  Who ever got their first would win one ticket to see a match.

JC got to drive a Mustang Shelby 500GT V8, but lost!  However, that wasn't the point, the issue was he rubbished the Mustang!!! :o :o :o :o  My favourite car; well the 1968 Mustang Fastback anyway! :D :D :D :D :D

To my surprise he found it only had a fuel capacity of 50 litres, so doing 14-15 mpg that wasn't good and made him repeatedly have to refill his tank on the journey.

But it was the interior that got the most criticism; he found it "like a 1970s Escort", rattling and generally very noisy!  No surprise he also found the American designed interior plastic and uninspiration, picking on particularly the manual adjustable seats, when a European car at that level would have electric seats.  He reckoned that was why the car new was just £35K.

The sound from the engine was gorgeous, but at that MPG you are paying for it.  As I have commented on in another thread, in America that MPG is no worry in a V8 compared to the UK with our fuel prices!

In all it was disappointing to hear such a beautiful, iconic, car being rubbished, but hey ho I can understand why! ::) ::) ::) ;)

Lizzie, we saw the programme, we know. ;)

But what he didn't really go into is, compared to the vxr8, the mustang has crap brakes and can't do corners. Comparatively speking if course. And IMO the interior on the vxr8 is much better.

Ford concentrated on bhp above all else by the looks. Which might be an admirable trait,
until the realisation that engine tuning is the easiest after market area to fiddle with.
It wins the " biggest chav stripe" competition hands down and is covered in pointless tinsel.

... And yet, I still rather like it.

Although not as much as a vxr8 ;)

I won my own bet then Chris! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;)

I also still love the look and the sound but the Vx car, you are right, has everything we expect in Europe. ;) :y

Not when compared to the current VXR8, that is truly hideous!

Reminds me of Vicky Pollard with extra bling for some reason. Truly awful. Rather have the Mustang than the above piece of shit!

Why couldnt they just have stuck with sensible, like in the prev gen VXR8 instead of over-designing every nook and cranny of that poor car.

So............let's think...................a Mustang Shelby 500GT at £35K....................then £10K bringing it up to European standards............................that would be a result for me!! :y :y :y

Oh............hang..............I haven't got £35K let alone the extra £10K!! :'( :'( :'( :'( ;D ;D

Thats 45k for a 2 year old used car! I am sorry but Vx have truly screwed up the new VXR8 in styling and pricing.

Actually slightly cheaper than a M5 and probably a whole lot cheaper to buy parts for/service. The M3 used to cost £995 for a major service with no major part replacement included. Invlove a few part changes and you would get little change from £3k.
