Stainless Versus Exhaust Paint.
« on: 08 May 2008, 14:52:47 »

Never actually considered this before now.  Just seen this on Fleabay on one of the car auctions.

An SBD exhaust manifold (cost new over £500) and a custom made 2.5 inch exhaust (exiting at the offside rear) will be included with the car.  The entire exhaust system has been painted with a very high tempreture expensive coating ready to be fitted to the car.

With the cost of systems these days I was considering a cat back system for my Elite when the current exhaust expires.  this in mind I got a couple of quotes which came out arround £450 for the standard layout, or £500 for running a system to single back box's (x2) down each side of the car.

I have no idea what the cost or the kind of paint mentioned above is, but would it actually make a difference to the life of the exhaust, and on a pro rata basis would it be viable aginst the cost of a stainless system.

Would appreciate any thought/experiance from anyone.

How long should an exhaust system last on an Omega?  I've had my car for about about 3 years now, and the exhaust still seems to be rock solid, although it is beginning to sound a bit fruity these days.

I've adopted the usual solution for this - I keep the windows closed and turn the radio up. :)

Of course, it helps that I can turn my hearing aids off ::)

Hi Skruntie, Where did you get the quote for the exhaust only it seems a bit steep. Reading posts on the forum i gather a genuine Vaux one from a dealer is around the 200 mark. That is with a trade card. Thinking about changing either all or part of mine soon as it's starting to sound a bit tinny. Got through MOT the other week ok though.

Mine is a Genuine Vx System fitted 12/11/2004 @ 49017 miles.  So is currently 3 and 1/2 years old.  The down side for me is that the car doesnt get a lot of use.  Currently 63,250 on the clock.  So has only done 14233.  I dont know the condition of the middle pipes but the back box is sttuffed.

I was considering buying a Stainless back box for the Elite and but the Elite back box on the GLS to sell as its in excellent condition, but the £250 quote for the SS Back Box on it's own put me off.

I get the choice of back box's and tail pipe's.  Apparently I get to decide the what it sounds like on the noise level side of it.

I just like the offshore power boat sound and the deffinate V6 burble.  So as long as it sounds like that then I am happy.

Bit pointless as .. AFAIK ... most exhausts rust from the inside to out, due to condensation/acid from the exhaust gases.

IMHO this comes under the heading "snake oil"  :)

Many thanks.  Was just curious that's all, and if there had been anything in worth doing then I would have considered it.

Think I may stick to the Genuine Vx from all the posts I have read.

I am getting a stainless cat back system fitted tomorrow morning for 375 - which comes with a lifetime guarnatee

You cant have 2 boxes running down each side of the car as the fuel tank gets in the way.

In order to have a dual exit you have to run 2 pipes into a silencer in the normal location then split the exists. The left (looking at the back of the car) will come straight out. The right one will bend and run between the fuel tank and rear bumper and then bend again to exit out the right hand side of the rear bumper.

I have settled on 2 large ovals ala RS4 style, which should look something like (please excuse the rough drawing)

I will let you know how it sounds tomorrow :-)
