Italian Elections on Sunday
« on: 23 February 2013, 12:13:52 »

I have more than a suspicion that the outcome will have a big effect on Europe.

I still find it difficult to believe Berlusconi is standing and more importantly that people will actually vote for him.

Mr Grillo? He could become king maker. His manifesto includes a referendum on the euro.

Bersani wants investment and jobs- German/Brussels austerity is not enough.

Ah, Chris, the interest lies in the fact the Italians are in shite street, more than us.... and everyone here is hoping that the results will be the start of the end, and give us more clout in the 'out' campaign :y

Wrong, I like Europe, have many good French friends, I want the UK to trade with Europe in a free trade area to all of our mutual benefits, but I don't want to be ruled by a European dictatorship or UK law to be subservient. I want a strong independent UK that makes its own agreements around the world, sits and has its own voice (Not the EU's on global standards committees) so we go back to what we are good at as a global trading nation.

I haven't got a lot of time for the IMHO fool Lord King, but this UK / China agreement of the UK trading their currency is the sort of thing we are good at and must have Brussels, Paris and Frankfurt cursing us again, where we continue to reinforce London as the global financial trading centre, that they are out to destroy.

I think many Europhiles will be proved wrong again if / when we leave the EU, as substantial supply side reforms will then be possible which will make our economy much more attractive and we will have a mini manufacturing boom, just like Turkey is enjoying at the moment. Turkey and Eastern Europe has similar wage structures, so ask yourself the question why are companies investing in Turkey and not Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic? It is because Turkey is outside of the EU and all of the costly social legislation. Turkey is adjacent to a major market without all of the incumbents costs!  :y :y :y

So I was wrong at the start, and right again by the end. Excellent. :y

I certainly wouldn't want our 'social legislation' to resemble Turkey's.

I think that Italy will end up with an ineffectual weak coalitian much like our own.  ::)  They won't get much done and will just tinker around the edges and will end up back at square one!  :-\

That seems a fair assessment, but not like ours. I think theirs will be much more dangerous for the EU.
Roll on. :y

I think Berlusconi will be out for revenge against the EU, so if he gets enough votes to be part of a coalition I think it will be interesting for Italy and the EU.  ::) ::) ::)

Might be a good case for getting a big tub of popcorn while we sit on the periphery watching. :y :y :y

Any party in most country's have their hands tied financially, there was little point voting before the crash, there is even less point now.
