Ar35 question
« on: 03 March 2013, 13:12:38 »

Right, i'm a automatic box virgin so i'm still getting used to these things  ::)

My box seems (to me) like it isnt playing properly as on previous post.
Due to the amount of neglect in general over the last 2 years of ownership, my first port of call was to dump the atf and refil it with fresh oil.
The theory behind this was the oil was crappy and the box was half empty.

Well i've just been for a nice gentle drive  :-X to warm the oil up.
Jacked the car up levelish and removed the filler / level plug only to find the box is actually full of atf and looking at the colour it is pretty new  :-\

Do these boxes adapt to your driving style ?
If so, how do you reset it so it re learns my style ?

Current thinking is that the previous owner had a different driving style to me  :-\

Or I could be just talking 'dangle berries'  ;D

TIA

Was the engine running when you checked the level, it should be.

Elite now gone.  Bought an X-Type 4x4.  If there had been an Omega 4x4 I would have bought that instead.  We really liked the Omega, but I wanted 4x4.

Yes, there is a guide in the maintenance section, it must be running.

Yes! Loads. The torque converter doesn't get filled with ATF if the engine isn't running.

If you take the plug out without the engine running you should get a nice oil slick. Ask Tonygnome how I know. ;D ;D

I wonder how quickly it drains back into the sump(s) after a run ? OP may not have lost much ATF if plug was removed before it had oozed back :-\

Topped it up yesterday
Managed to get nearly 2 ltrs in there before it dribbled down my arm  >:(
I'll drive around for a few days and see how it behaves before I pour anymore atf down my sleave  ::)

Question, if I do come to change all the oil.
Will disconecting both the flexi pipes to it then starting the engine clear the torque converter of oil before I remove the sumps ?

Afaik it will clear the sumps as well,so would cause damage. You need to be pouring new atf in almost as fast as its coming out until all the old atf is purged.Thats my understanding anyway.
Imo remove the sumps clean the bottom of them, check for bits of thrust washer. Then fill the box with ATF.Then remove flexi return from oil cooler and run engine while putting more ATF in and continue until new ATF is coming out of the return pipe.
You will get through a lot of ATF,but will have a complete change rather than a partial one.
Sassanach uses a similar method,so it may be worth asking him for advice.
