Disk Brakes Query!
« on: 06 March 2013, 11:53:35 »

Having been in Muslimland and Mallorca since October my Omega has been sitting around unused since then. I am back in Aviemore next Tuesday. I have the battery disconnected using one of these easy disconnect thingys. My question is, what is the best way to clear the disk brakes of rust which inevitably will be coating the disks?. Drive slowly with the brakes on lightly?, or just let them bed in?. I did not think I would be away for so long. Has anybody got any answers on this great forum?.

I would have thought go for a first drive when it quiet and use the brakes gently until clear.

I'd just let them bed in. It might also be that the pads are now a little tight/rusted into the calipers, so you might have to remove & free them off. IMHO the discs will be OK though.  :y

Yep, give it a little gentle use and then inspect the disks for pitting, I would say, just in case the rust has penetrated.

Well! arrived on Tuesday night to a snowstorm in Aviemore. Wednesday morning was not any better, but the afternoon saw the sun come out. One flat tyre on rear nearside. Tried to take wheel off, no chance as wheel nuts too tight. I made up a gizmo to utilize the air in the spare tyre. It blew the flat tyre up enough to move. Next, tightened the battery disconnect thingy and tried to start, nothing! Took out battery to fast charge and put back in later, still nothing. Took off quick disconnect thingy and attached clamp directly to battery post. Bingo! The offending item was checked and found to be corroded. Cleaned and greased and put back on. Now working ok. Started her up and there was a tappety noise for a few seconds then quietness. Reset everything as per instructions on this forum and drove slowly round to clear the disk brakes. They were not as bad as I thought they might be. So, for sitting around for over 5 months I am quite pleased with her.  :y :y :y

Thanks Ozzy. Things are getting very fraught in muslimworld I am afraid. In the case of Iran (which I have been in, beautiful country but dodgy locals!) and Korea which is not a muslim country poses a bigger threat at this point in time. All in all, we in the west are under a very serious situation on all sides. Aside from the tangent which I have been ranting on about, the Omega performed brilliantly today having travelled over 150 miles. Can't hope for more than that.  :y :y
