Oil sump bolt rounded by previous owner/dealer
« on: 09 March 2013, 13:28:05 »

Hi guys.
Reeeeally p*ssed off  >:( sump bolt on the new Fusion is stripped. I knew as soon as I looked at it that it was rounded and all manner of sockets (i even tried imperial ones) and nowt goes on. well annoyed.

Anyway.

i'm going to buy a vacuum oil extractor thingy from amazon. the reviews are actually quite good.

however before i do that i had an idea. as i dont know how to weld another bolt on and i really dont want to get a punch/chisel to knock it round (i'm useless at doing that) i remembered a set of stud extraction sockets that we have at school....

http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=stud+extractor+socket&hl=en&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=eTg7UZ_hGeSK7Ab33YHQBQ&ved=0CAoQ_AUoAQ&biw=1366&bih=622#imgrc=MIK3YpceWDBJzM%3A%3B3678eHJNDI9cFM%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.toolbuddy.co.uk%252Fekmps%252Fshops%252Ftoolbuddy%252Fimages%252F4-pce-stud-extractor-socket-set-roller-bearings-1-2-dr-4116-p.jpg%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.toolbuddy.co.uk%252F4-pce-stud-extractor-socket-set-roller-bearings-12-dr-4116-p.asp%3B450%3B450

if i use the bigger of the set will this work?

cheers.

I think your best bet is to chisel it round, get a new sump plug ready first of course.
You are in "Omega general help" by the way.

Take it to college and get them to weld a nut onto it,then just undo it and fit a new one. ;)
Im not a fan of those oil extractor gadgets tbh.Imo they will leave the shite sitting in the bottom of the sump.

Can you get a stillsons or mole-grip on it Webby?

Or you could get these (or similar): http://www.screwfix.com/p/irwin-5-piece-bolt-grip-nut-remover-set/96028?kpid=96028?cm_mmc=Google-_-Product%20Listing%20Ads-_-Sales%20Tracking-_-sales%20tracking%20url&gclid=CJPXrdDg77UCFePHtAodqBwAQw

The syphon works perfectly on the 2.5TDs, though not sure that it'll do the same on the V6s. :-\

cheers albs. that was my first thought tbh. but the tech bloke got a bit arsey just borrowing some square sockets the other day.... he'd go nuts if i asked him to do that  ;D

what do you reckon about the stud extraction thingy. when i used one before they seemed to lock on really well as they sort of dig in as you twist to undo.  :-\

It depends on why the original plug became rounded in the first place :-\

Worst case scenario is that the thread stripped during the 1st service and the monkey glued the plug in place. At the second service 'whoever' (probably a different monkey) rounded the flats on the sump plug trying to unscrew it.

Are you sure it isn't a Torx with the hole bunged up with crud? What is the sump made of? (steel or aluminium).

I would try mole grips first, I'm not keen on welding upside down :( especially under the engine were fire is a big risk and electric welders can destroy electronic components (ECU, alternator).
Second option would be to file or grind new flats on the bolt
Third option would be a new oil pan/sump. A new sump for SWMBO's Golf cost me about £60 after I smashed the original on a rock. I don't know what Ford prices are like though :-\

no more than a drain plug in one side of the sump. SWMBO's Smart doesn't have a drain plug, so a suction extractor is the only way to remove the oil. I removed the sump on it after having sucked the oil out ..... there was just a large spoonful of oil left in there.

Yes. Both registered trademarks for locking pliers.

There is a bit of an art to using locking pliers to grip a bolt head. If you dive in and grip it as tight as you can first time you will probably take the corner off the bolt head leaving nothing to grab on to. If the locking pliers have jaws with hardened teeth you can probably start off gently and make teeth marks in the smooth surface that will give a good enough grip to get the bolt turning.

I wonder if the sump plug is the same as Ford have used for years :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\ I'm sure I've still got a few in my tool box :-\ :-\ :-\

BTW, we used to replace them every couple of services on the regular gars as it appears Ford made the Sump plug from cheese ::)

13mm hex. You have obviously tried a six sided socket.

Easiest way is to heat the nut and bash on a 12mm/1/2"  six sided socket.
