Spare wheel well
« on: 10 March 2013, 23:49:00 »

Had a towbar fitted sat people who fitted it found the spare wheel well full of water and what looked like the mastic sealant split in a couple of places would this allow the water to get in or could there be another course and what's the best way to reseal the seam and what with

Blocked sunroof drain, a dodgy boot seal or a dodgy rear light cluster seal are about the only places to be looking :-\

To drain the water, remove the body plug from the bottom of the wheel well :y

Got the water out nice and dry now and no water trace from boot seal only way I could see the water coming in was from the crack in the seam sealant looks like putty that's dried and gone hard or if its had slight knock not enough to bend panel just squeeze sealer don't want to use silicon as heard it rusts the panels so what's best to use

Possible other cause could be the rear wheel arch sealer cracked and as you drive the water is being thrown into arch and then seeps into well.  :-\ :-\

Where will I find the sunroof rear drain as I believe this car has been standing for a while with the amount of green on the boot hinges and struts just to check and what sealant would you recommend I use

Black plastic tube (5/8"?) just infront of the wheel well & just inside the first aid compartment on the other side

3M does a good sealer it is called seam and body sealer it comes in a tube that you put in a gun it dries but stays flexible,  :y I believe it comes as a brush on in a tin too.  :-\ there are others around but I have used this and found it to be one of the best.  :y :y

this may or may not be of interest but if youre looking for where water is coming in.... try hosing it down and replicating the leak... :)

I've a good idea as the were beads of water where the sealant is cracked but its at the rear of the well and there are no other traces of water tracks on the well and all the other seams seam ok have took it through the wash a few times and its not soapy water and don't know how bad its leaking as the guy that fitted the towbar said it wasn't that deep so will seal what I can see and see if I get any more in
